Portugal Focuses on Upcoming Clash with Uzbekistan

Houston [US], June 19: As they prepare for their second match in the FIFA World Cup against Uzbekistan, the Portugal national team is tuning out external distractions, particularly regarding their iconic player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Following a disappointing 1-1 draw with DR Congo, the team emphasized that they consider the criticism they face to be inconsequential.

In their World Cup opener, Portugal, led by Cristiano, managed only a 1-1 tie against DR Congo, despite taking an early lead and controlling most of the game. This match marked Ronaldo's sixth World Cup appearance, yet he continues to struggle with a goal drought that has now reached ten matches in major tournaments, dating back to the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ruben Dias, a key player for Portugal, stated, as reported by a news outlet, "The criticism is not significant for us; it’s just noise that comes with the competition... It’s all just noise."

He further explained, "It always happens when a match doesn’t go as planned. We are isolating ourselves from unnecessary criticism."

Ronaldo faced sharp criticism from Thierry Henry, a former Arsenal and France star, who suggested that the legendary forward was prioritizing personal achievements over team success. Henry remarked, "The team needs to score, not just you." He expressed concern that Ronaldo's pursuit of individual goals might hinder his teammates' chances.

Despite the criticism, Dias defended Ronaldo, asserting that the player is accustomed to media scrutiny and understands that perfection is unattainable in tournaments like these. "Cristiano is well-versed in handling the media pressure that comes with club and national team competitions," Dias noted.

He added, "In this type of competition, perfection is never guaranteed... Success comes from performing well in each game."

Having missed the opener due to injury, Dias confirmed he is ready for the match against Uzbekistan. He anticipates that Uzbekistan may employ similar defensive strategies as DR Congo, a tactic he is familiar with from his time at Manchester City in the Premier League.

"I often face teams that utilize a back five, so I have a solid understanding of how to approach it," Dias explained. "Maintaining positional discipline is crucial in matches like these. I believe our players possess the quality needed to make a difference by respecting our positions and making the right choices," he concluded.
