Portugal Honors Diogo Jota with Emotional Victory Over Croatia in FIFA World Cup 2026
Portugal's Tribute to Diogo Jota
Toronto [Canada], July 3: Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of Portugal, expressed that the team aimed to pay tribute to their late teammate Diogo Jota in a meaningful way after achieving a thrilling 2-1 win against Croatia in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026, thus advancing to the Round of 16.
Significantly, July 3 marks the first anniversary of Jota's tragic passing. In 2025, Jota and his brother Andre Silva lost their lives in a car accident in northwestern Spain when their Lamborghini veered off the road and caught fire. This heartbreaking incident sent ripples through the football community, prompting clubs, fans, and football associations to honor the memory of the Portugal international.
In a video shared by ESPN Netherlands on X, Ronaldo spoke to reporters following the match, stating that the team wanted to commemorate Jota's legacy with their victory on this poignant anniversary, emphasizing that the late forward was present with them in spirit.
“As I mentioned earlier, we aimed to honor him in the best possible way, and that’s what we achieved. It’s been a year since he left us, and we wanted to win for him as well; he has been with us,” Ronaldo remarked in the video.
After the match concluded, Ronaldo appeared visibly moved. He paid tribute on the field by holding up Jota's No. 21 jersey, with his teammates joining in the remembrance.
Ronaldo also conveyed an emotional message on social media post-match, stating, “We won for us, for Diogo, and for Portugal!!! LET’S GO!!!!” He shared this alongside a team photo featuring Jota’s No. 21 jersey.
Prior to kickoff, Portugal had already honored Jota by displaying a photograph of the late striker during the pre-match ceremonies inside the stadium.
On the pitch, Portugal bounced back from an early challenge to secure a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Croatia. Substitute Goncalo Ramos emerged as the hero, scoring a decisive goal in stoppage time, propelling Roberto Martinez’s team into the Round of 16.
Croatia initially took the lead with a goal from Ivan Perisic, who became the nation’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, but Ronaldo equalized from the penalty spot after a VAR review. Croatia had two goals disallowed for offside, including a late equalizer deep into stoppage time, as Portugal held firm to set up a Round of 16 clash against Spain.
