On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his heartfelt wishes to the Indian team competing in the Commonwealth Games, emphasizing the nation's aspirations for the athletes to excel and bring pride to India.
Taking place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, the Commonwealth Games 2026 features over 120 Indian athletes participating in eight able-bodied sports and five para sports, aiming to enhance India's illustrious history in this multi-sport event.
During the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi remarked, "The Commonwealth Games have commenced in Glasgow, and the entire nation is rallying behind our athletes. Everyone hopes that each competitor performs exceptionally and wins the admiration of the public."
Recent Highlights from the Games
India had a promising day at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday, with boxer Sachin Siwach advancing to the pre-quarterfinals, while the women's lawn bowls team, consisting of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh, continued their unbeaten streak, edging closer to a semifinal spot.
Following para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's bronze medal win, Indian athletes showcased strong performances in boxing, lawn bowls, and gymnastics.
However, challenges arose in swimming and wheelchair basketball. Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu is set to kick off her competition on Sunday, as India looks to maintain its momentum and increase its medal tally.
Innovative Educational Initiatives
PM Modi also mentioned the innovative 'Aksharakanduka' initiative from Keralam, where a teacher and a Sanskrit club are creatively promoting the language by associating Sanskrit letters with football terminology to make learning more engaging.
He stated, "I discovered a remarkable sports initiative in South Chittoor, Ernakulam, Keralam. A school there has a Sanskrit club led by teacher Abhilash, who is making Sanskrit accessible and enjoyable through the 'Aksharakanduka' project, linking letters to football-related words."
