Prime Minister Modi's Historic Visit to Sri Lanka

Colombo, April 5 – During his state visit to Sri Lanka from April 4 to 6, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with the legendary cricketers who triumphed in the 1996 Cricket World Cup, including notable figures like Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, Aravinda de Silva, and Marvan Atapattu.


This trip marks PM Modi's first return to Sri Lanka since 2019, following an invitation from President Disanayaka.


The Prime Minister met with the iconic team that secured Sri Lanka's first World Cup title by defeating Australia in the final held in Lahore.


Taking to his X account, PM Modi expressed his joy, stating, "Bonding through cricket! I am thrilled to have conversed with the players of the Sri Lankan cricket team that won the 1996 World Cup. This team captured the hearts of countless sports fans!"


Cricketing Legends Share Their Thoughts


Following their meeting, several players shared their experiences with the media, highlighting the strong cricketing relationship between India and Sri Lanka.


Marvan Atapattu, who amassed 14,036 runs in 360 matches, remarked, "It was an extraordinary meeting. We were fortunate to meet a leader who has elevated India to great heights. It was a privilege to meet the Prime Minister this evening."


Chaminda Vaas, a legendary bowler with 760 wickets, praised PM Modi's understanding of cricket, stating, "It was a great honor to meet him. We discussed our World Cup victory and how we defeated India in the semifinals. The Prime Minister is well-versed in cricket and showed genuine interest in our experiences."


Reflections from the 1996 Team

Aravinda de Silva, who played a pivotal role in the final with a match-winning century, noted, "He is a respected figure globally and has significantly contributed to India. His third term as Prime Minister is a remarkable achievement, and his influence will be crucial for our countries."


Sanath Jayasuriya, an explosive all-rounder, shared, "Meeting the Prime Minister was delightful. We discussed various topics, including cricket and his journey in politics. It was a valuable experience for us."


Romesh Kaluwitharana, who transformed ODI batting alongside Jayasuriya, added, "Since PM Modi took office, he has initiated many positive changes. India has always supported us during challenging times, including in cricket."


Kumar Dharmasena, a member of the 1996 team turned international umpire, expressed admiration for PM Modi's approachable demeanor, stating, "He is friendly and casual, which was fantastic. As a neighbor, he has provided significant support to Sri Lanka."


Strengthening India-Sri Lanka Cricket Relations

Over the years, the cricketing bond between India and Sri Lanka has strengthened, with both nations competing in numerous bilateral series and major ICC tournaments, including the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup final in Mumbai and the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup final in Bangladesh.


Looking ahead, both countries are set to co-host the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, with India aiming to defend their title.
