Prime Minister Modi Celebrates Lovlina's National Spirit

On August 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his admiration for boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who raised concerns about an inaccurate map of India displayed at a Glasgow restaurant during the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

During a meeting with India's medal winners at his residence, Borgohain shared her experiences from the Games, emphasizing the nation's remarkable achievements in boxing.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, PM Modi highlighted Lovlina's determination and recalled a moment when she demonstrated her pride for India.

He inquired about an incident involving the restaurant staff, which came to light after Lovlina addressed the issue during her visit to the eatery.

PM Modi asked, "What happened? Were you in a disagreement with the restaurant staff?"

Lovlina recounted that after a successful final day of competition, where many athletes secured medals, she felt compelled to speak up.

"Our performance was outstanding, and it was the last day. Everyone had won, and there were numerous Indians present. I felt a bit upset about the situation, so I firmly requested a change, and they agreed," she explained.

PM Modi praised her actions, noting that it exemplified a profound sense of national pride among athletes that goes beyond merely winning medals.

"In that moment of victory—filled with joy and camaraderie after the games—seeing that map and acknowledging it... the love for the country runs deep, not just on the surface when receiving a medal. This video of yours is remarkable and will be remembered for a long time," he stated.

He also commended the performance of Indian boxers, saying, "Now athletes worldwide are beginning to fear these boxers!"

Lovlina responded by affirming that Indian boxers have made a significant impact with their consistent performances.

"Absolutely, everyone was intimidated. Gold medals were coming in one after another. It was an incredible finish. The support we receive and the consecutive competitions we participate in are crucial factors," she remarked.

The Olympic medalist credited the Khelo India initiative for nurturing young talent and enhancing India's sports ecosystem.

"Many of our emerging athletes have come through the Khelo India program, which is driving significant changes across all sports," Lovlina added.

India made history in boxing at the Commonwealth Games 2026, leading the medal tally with seven gold and three silver medals.

This 10-medal achievement marked India's best-ever boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games, surpassing the previous record of six gold medals held by England (1934 and 2018) and Canada (1986).

India concluded its Commonwealth Games journey in Glasgow with a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, securing fourth place in the overall medal standings.

The Glasgow Games wrapped up after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which is set to host the centenary edition of the multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.
