Historic Achievements at the Commonwealth Games
In a remarkable display of talent, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Dilip Mahadu Gavit, who clinched gold, and silver medallists Mohammed Basil Morssinganakth and Murali Sreeshankar for their outstanding performances at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow.
On Day 7 of the Games, para-athlete Gavit made history by finishing the Men's 100m T47 event in a record time of 10.71 seconds, securing the gold medal. His fellow countryman Basil followed closely, earning silver with a time of 10.83 seconds, while England's Kevin Santos took home the bronze with a time of 10.85 seconds, marking a significant achievement for India in the para-athletics sprint event.
PM Modi praised the athletes for their dedication and hard work, emphasizing their role in bringing pride to the nation. He expressed his admiration for Gavit's phenomenal performance, stating, "Congratulations to him on winning the Gold Medal in the Men’s 100m T47 event with a remarkable timing, setting a new Games Record and achieving his Season Best. His speed, determination, and dedication have made our nation proud. Best wishes for his future endeavours," in a post on X.
He also commended Mohammed Basil Morssinganakth for his impressive sprint, saying, "A superb Silver for Mohammed Basil Morssinganakath! What a sprint and display of determination! Congratulations to him for the success and also achieving his Season Best. His success reflects his hard work and focus. May he continue to scale new heights in the times to come."
Gavit's final 30 meters were particularly thrilling as he surged ahead, while Basil skillfully maintained his position to secure India's top two finishes.
In another event, Murali Sreeshankar showcased his talent with a leap of 8.09m, earning him a silver medal, just behind Jamaica's Tajay Gayle, who won gold with a jump of 8.15m. Scotland's Stephen Mackenzie took bronze with a leap of 8.08m.
PM Modi also recognized Sreeshankar's achievement, stating, "An outstanding Silver for Sreeshankar! What an exceptional performance! Congratulations to him on winning the medal and that too with his best leap. His success will motivate several youngsters to pursue excellence in athletics. My best wishes for his upcoming endeavours."
Sreeshankar remained competitive for the gold until his final jump, ultimately finishing just six centimeters shy of Gayle's winning mark with a best of 7.97m. This silver medal makes him the first Indian male long jumper to win two Commonwealth Games medals, having previously secured silver at the Birmingham 2022 edition.
