Celebrating Achievements of Indian Athletes
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with the Indian athletes who participated in the Asian Games 2026, commending them for their remarkable achievements and emphasizing India's journey towards becoming a global sports leader.
Modi expressed his admiration for the athletes, stating that their accomplishments symbolize the collective dedication of players, coaches, support teams, and families. He remarked, "Your success is not just yours; it represents the triumph of millions of citizens across the nation."
The Prime Minister highlighted India's impressive performance at the Games, particularly celebrating the double-gold wins of both the men's and women's hockey teams, with the women's team ending a 44-year medal drought. He also acknowledged the cricket teams' medals, along with golds in kabaddi and archery, and successes in shooting, boxing, wrestling, and athletics.
Modi specifically praised the contributions of female athletes, who secured 38 out of India's total 85 medals, including 11 golds. He noted the historic achievement of winning medals in new disciplines like mixed martial arts, soft tennis, and various sailing events, stating, "Today, India is earning medals in sports where we had never succeeded before in the Asian Games."
The Prime Minister attributed India's rising sports success to consistent efforts over the last decade, mentioning initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India, along with significant investments in infrastructure, grassroots training, and financial support for athletes.
Modi revealed that over Rs 36,000 crore has been allocated to enhance Khelo India and fortify sports federations.
He pointed out that more than 1,000 Khelo India centers are aiding grassroots development, providing athletes with financial support, including a monthly stipend of Rs 50,000 under TOPS and assistance for international coaching.
Looking forward to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, India's hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, and aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics, Modi emphasized the need to identify sporting talent in children aged five to 15.
He concluded by encouraging medalists to visit schools, their hometowns, and former training venues to inspire the next generation of athletes.
