PM Modi Celebrates India-Australia Cricket Ties at Melbourne Cricket Ground
A Historic Visit to the MCG
On July 10, during his three-day trip to Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a notable visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). He expressed India's ambition to host the 2036 Olympics and shared his excitement about Chennai being selected to kick off the Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season.
Earlier that day, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that the BBL 2026-27 will commence in India, with the opening match scheduled at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium in December. This announcement was made in a joint statement with PM Modi. Cricket Australia later confirmed that the Melbourne Renegades will compete against the Perth Scorchers in this historic season opener on December 12, marking the first BBL game held outside of Australia.
India's Sporting Aspirations
While addressing the audience at the MCG, PM Modi highlighted India's upcoming hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its bid for the 2036 Olympics. He welcomed the news of Chennai hosting the BBL opener, emphasizing that sporting events in India attract significant viewership.
"India is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and is also aiming for the Olympics in 2036. With Brisbane set to host the 2032 Olympics, we are committed to developing sports infrastructure on a grand scale for these global events. I am thrilled that a Big Bash League match will take place in Chennai, as hosting events in India guarantees extensive reach and viewership," he stated.
Cricket: A Shared Passion
PM Modi expressed that the MCG evokes two strong emotions for Indians: the thrill of an India vs Australia match and the understanding that cricket is a shared passion between the two nations. He noted that the sport has fortified his friendship with PM Albanese, acting as a natural bridge between them.
"Entering the MCG brings forth two emotions for any Indian: the excitement of an India-Australia match and the realization that cricket is a shared passion in both our countries. Today, however, there is no pressure of a 'last-over finish.' Instead, we celebrate the joy of the game, the warmth of our friendship, and the energy of future champions," he remarked.
Strengthening Ties Through Sports
PM Modi reminisced about their visit to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad during the 2023 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, highlighting cricket as a natural connection point between him and PM Albanese.
"Whenever I meet my friend PM Albanese, cricket has always been a connecting point. Our visit to the stadium in Ahmedabad was memorable, and being here today, I can truly feel the sporting spirit, especially with legends like Steve Waugh and Lisa Sthalekar present," he added.
A Decade of Opportunities
PM Albanese welcomed PM Modi to the MCG, emphasizing the historic cricket rivalry between India and Australia and the record attendance during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. He acknowledged cricket legends Lisa Sthalekar and Steve Waugh for their contributions to the sport.
"Prime Minister Modi, welcome back to the sacred turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the birthplace of Test Cricket. Just two years ago, fans from both nations broke a 90-year-old attendance record, showcasing the passion and respect in our rivalry. It is an honor to be joined by cricket legends who are revered in India as well," he stated.
The Roadmap for Future Cooperation
Albanese noted that the next decade presents a significant opportunity for India and Australia to enhance their sporting ties, with India hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games and Australia the 2032 Olympics. He expressed confidence that Australia would support India's bid for the 2036 Olympics.
"With India hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030 and Australia the Olympics in 2032, there is a decade of opportunity ahead for friendly rivalry and increased cooperation across sports," he said.
Launching the Sports Collaboration Roadmap
PM Modi and PM Albanese also visited the Shane Warne Stand at the MCG, where they unveiled the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation, aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations. This initiative combines Australia's expertise in hosting major sporting events with India's growing ambitions in the sector.
The Roadmap outlines key areas for collaboration, including capacity building, sports science, and technology research, while also opening new avenues for trade, tourism, and investment. It aims to deepen cooperation in staging major international sporting events, with Australia preparing for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and India gearing up for the landmark centenary edition of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
Expanding Beyond Cricket
PM Modi emphasized that the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap will extend cooperation beyond cricket, focusing on sports training, science, and technology to strengthen the partnership between the two nations both on and off the field.
"I am pleased to launch the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap today with PM Albanese. This initiative will enhance cooperation not only in cricket but across various sports, allowing us to progress together in areas such as sports training and technology," he concluded.
