Prime Minister Modi Honors Medal Winners

On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the medalists from India's Commonwealth Games 2026 to his residence in New Delhi. He expressed pride in their remarkable achievements, emphasizing that their success serves as an inspiration for the youth of the nation.

During the gathering, PM Modi shared a video on social media showcasing his interaction with the medal winners, including gold medalist boxer Sakshi Chaudhary. The post was captioned with the encouraging phrase, "Always #Cheer4Bharat."

In the video, Sakshi Chaudhary expressed her pride in meeting the Prime Minister, stating, "Hello friends! This is Sakshi Chaudhary. Today, our honourable Prime Minister has invited us, the Commonwealth Games medalists, and we feel very proud. We are extremely happy to have met him; he is very humble. Sir, would you like to say something?"

PM Modi responded with the motivational phrase, "Jo khelega, woh khilega" (The one who plays, will blossom), urging everyone to cheer for Bharat.

In a follow-up post, the Prime Minister shared his delight in hosting the medal winners at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, where he listened to their experiences from the Games. He praised their exceptional performances, stating, "Each one of them has made our nation proud through their exceptional performances. Their success will motivate many youngsters."

India's Performance at the Commonwealth Games

India concluded its Commonwealth Games journey in Glasgow with an impressive tally of 39 medals: 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze, securing fourth place in the overall standings.

The Games wrapped up after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially transferring the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which is set to host the centenary edition of the event in Ahmedabad in 2030.

The baton and flag were handed over to Indian representatives, including Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi during the closing ceremony.

Ahmedabad will be the second Indian city to host the Commonwealth Games, following New Delhi's hosting in 2010.

Despite sending a smaller team to Glasgow, with 122 athletes compared to 210 in Birmingham 2022, India maintained its fourth-place finish and achieved a higher medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals.

Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh stood out as the only Indian athlete to secure two medals at the Games.
