Pakistan Cricket Faces Turmoil with Major Squad Changes Ahead of Edgbaston Test

Crisis Hits Pakistan Cricket Team

On September 1, the Pakistan cricket team found itself in a state of upheaval as seven players were released from the squad, and coaches Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul were dismissed just before the third Test at Edgbaston. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has demanded explanations from the selectors regarding the inclusion of Mohammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq.

The players who were let go include Mohammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Agha, Ali Usman, Aamer Jamal, Awais Zafar, and Khurram Shahzad.

As reported by Cricinfo, the PCB issued a notice on the same day it announced the changes, requiring the selection committee to provide a written justification within 24 hours for the selections of Rizwan and Imam, along with the decision-making process.

Rizwan has been Pakistan's top Test run-scorer since the beginning of 2024, boasting the highest batting average on the team. Imam, while having played only two Tests in that timeframe, has been a standout performer in domestic cricket.

In a related development, former captain Misbah-ul-Haq has tendered his resignation from the national selection committee following the PCB's significant alterations to the Test squad and coaching staff during the ongoing tour in England.

The PCB has yet to accept Misbah's resignation, and he has also chosen to resign from his position as a batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.

In response to the crisis, Pakistan has introduced five uncapped players to the squad, alongside Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who collectively have only 10 matches of experience.

The five new uncapped players are Arafat Minhas, Mohammad Imran Jnr, Saad Baig, Mohammad Imran Randhawa, and Razaullah.

Additionally, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke have joined the Test coaching staff in preparation for the upcoming third Test.
