Oman Secures Spot in 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier Despite Loss to UAE
Oman's Journey to the 2027 ODI World Cup Qualifier
Dubai [UAE], November 4: Oman has clinched a spot in the 2027 men's ODI World Cup Qualifier, even after facing a 42-run defeat against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in their concluding match of the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2.
With both Oman and Namibia finishing with 33 points, Oman advanced to the 10-team global qualifier due to a better net run rate. Namibia, which is co-hosting the 2027 World Cup alongside South Africa and Zimbabwe, will now have to compete in the Qualifier Playoff to maintain their chances of qualifying for the tournament, as reported by a sports news outlet.
In pursuit of 227 runs for victory, Oman struggled early, finding themselves at 28 for 3 and ultimately ending their innings at 184 for 9. Mujibur Ali was the standout performer for Oman, scoring 65 runs, while the UAE bowlers effectively controlled the match.
Earlier in the match, UAE batted first, scoring 226 for 8. Captain Rahul Chopra and Adeeb Usmani each contributed 47 runs, with Basil Hameed adding 43. Oman’s Shakeel Ahmed was the most effective bowler, taking 3 wickets for 42 runs.
Despite a challenging end to their League 2 campaign, where they lost their last seven matches, Oman joins the United States, Scotland, and the Netherlands as the four teams that secured direct entry to the global qualifier.
Namibia, Canada, Nepal, and UAE will now participate in the eight-team Qualifier Playoff, which will also include Jersey and Kuwait from the World Cup Challenge League A, as well as Italy and Uganda from Challenge League B.
This Qualifier Playoff represents the last chance for teams to secure a place in the global qualifier, with four spots available. The global qualifier will ultimately determine the final four teams that will compete in the 2027 World Cup.
The winner of the global qualifier will gain direct access to the World Cup group stage, while the teams finishing in second, third, and fourth place will enter the newly established Super Series.
Scheduled from October 2 to November 21, the 2027 men's ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, featuring 14 teams and 57 matches across 12 venues.
