In a surprising turn of events, Novak Djokovic struggled with both physical issues and mental challenges, ultimately falling to a determined younger rival who remained unfazed while competing against one of tennis' greatest players.

The 39-year-old veteran was eliminated from the US Open after a grueling first-round match against Mariano Navone, ending with a score of 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. The match lasted an exhausting four hours and 36 minutes.

This match marked the longest opening round of Djokovic's Grand Slam career and represented his earliest exit from such a tournament in 20 years, dating back to the 2006 Australian Open. Notably, he had never before lost in the first round at the US Open.

As he faced defeat on the anniversary of his US Open debut, questions arose about whether this could be Djokovic's last appearance at this or any Grand Slam event.

During the match, Djokovic committed a staggering 70 unforced errors, showcasing a performance that concluded just minutes before midnight.

Navone, who grew up idolizing Djokovic, remarked, "It was very tough for me because you are playing with the GOAT on this court. For sure it’s the best thing I’ve had on court. This is an amazing court and the biggest stage. I’m very happy. What can I say?"

The 24-time major champion appeared to struggle physically, reportedly vomiting at least once and showing signs of cramping, particularly in his left foot. It was evident throughout the match that Djokovic was not at his best, as the toll of illness and fatigue became apparent. The No. 4 seed from Serbia initially took a 3-0 and 4-1 lead but ultimately lost the first set, a first for him in the opening round of the US Open since 2006.

With his wife, Jelena, watching anxiously from the stands, Djokovic displayed flashes of brilliance, celebrating a second-set win with a reserved fist pump and gesturing for applause after taking the third set.

However, Navone, a 25-year-old Argentine who recently claimed his first ATP singles title, proved to be a formidable opponent.

Djokovic's frustration with his physical condition was palpable. After hitting a shot wide in the fourth set, he landed awkwardly and dropped his racket.

He seemed to concede the fourth set, unable to rally for what would have been his 43rd five-set victory, while Navone celebrated his first.

"It’s unbelievable," Navone exclaimed. "This means a lot. It’s a dream come true."

This defeat adds to a troubling trend for Djokovic, who also faced a first-round loss at the Cincinnati hardcourt event earlier this month. That match was his first since being defeated by top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals.
