Norway Coach Stale Solbakken Reflects on Defeat Against France in World Cup 2026
Norway's Struggles Against France
In a recent FIFA World Cup 2026 Group I match held in Boston, Norway's coach Stale Solbakken acknowledged that his team was caught off guard by France's rapid counter-attacks following turnovers in critical areas.
Despite the loss, Solbakken emphasized that Norway had ample opportunities to score, citing four significant chances in the first half alone, along with several others throughout the game.
He commended his players for their offensive efforts but pointed out that errors in ball possession were detrimental against a sharp French team.
Ousmane Dembele's remarkable hat-trick led France to a decisive 4-1 victory over Norway.
“When we lose the ball, things happen quickly. We generated chances consistently, and the players deserve recognition for that. It wasn't just in the second half; we had substantial opportunities throughout the match,” Solbakken remarked.
“We had four major chances in the first half, which I believe warrants acknowledgment. However, losing possession in certain areas can lead to swift counter-attacks,” he added.
Both teams had already secured their spots in the knockout stages after winning their first two matches. France was leading the group on goal difference and only needed a draw to secure the top position.
Nevertheless, they concluded the group stage with a strong performance, solidifying their first-place finish in Group I.
Notably, key players like Manchester City's Erling Haaland, Arsenal's Martin Odegaard, and Alexander Sorloth did not start for Norway in this final group match against France. Solbakken made the strategic choice to rest these players in preparation for the Round of 32.
Defending his decision, Solbakken stated that while fans might have preferred to see their star players in action, maintaining the squad's freshness was crucial for a successful World Cup campaign.
“The only reason for not fielding our best players is that fans in Norway and here would have loved to see Erling and our captain Martin Odegaard play. However, prioritizing a longer World Cup run is essential, and that’s our goal,” he concluded.
