New Zealand's Remarkable Achievement

The New Zealand cricket team made headlines by reaching the final of the 2026 T20 World Cup, held at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, after a stunning nine-wicket win over South Africa on March 4. Chasing a target of 169, the Black Caps accomplished the feat with 43 balls remaining, securing their spot in the final against either India or England on March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Finn Allen shone brightly, smashing a record-setting century off just 33 balls, while he and Tim Seifert (who scored 58 off 33) formed a formidable opening partnership of 117 runs in just 55 deliveries. The South African team managed to score only 168 runs, with Matt Henry, Cole McConchie, and Rachin Ravindra each taking two wickets.

New Zealand Sets New Records

New Zealand's run rate of 13.48 is now the highest ever recorded in a T20 World Cup innings against Test-playing nations. This remarkable achievement surpassed the previous record set by India, who had posted a massive 256 against Zimbabwe just a week earlier in Chennai. No other team has managed to maintain a run rate exceeding 13 against Test-playing nations.

In terms of overall performance, only the Netherlands' chase of 193/4 in 13.5 overs against Ireland in the 2014 edition had a higher run rate than New Zealand's. Sri Lanka's score of 260/6 against Kenya in 2007 is the only other instance of a team scoring at a rate exceeding 13. Furthermore, New Zealand achieved the highest run rate in a knockout match in T20 World Cup history, breaking England's previous record of 10.95 set during the 2022 semi-final against India. They also completed the fastest chase of 160+ runs in T20I cricket by a Test-playing nation, surpassing the West Indies' record of 37 balls against South Africa in 2024. Among associate teams, only Austria has completed a quicker chase of over 160 runs. This chase is also the fastest for totals exceeding 150 runs in T20 World Cup history, breaking Scotland's record of 41 balls against Oman in 2024. Previously, the West Indies held the record for the fastest chase against a full member nation, achieving 170 runs with 25 balls to spare against Australia in 2009.

*Ireland was not a Test-playing nation in 2014 as they became a full member in 2017
