New Zealand Triumphs in Final T20I Against India
Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: In a thrilling conclusion to the T20I series, New Zealand emerged victorious against India by seven wickets at Seddon Park on Sunday. The hosts chased down a target of 192 runs in just 17.4 overs, providing a consolation win while India claimed the series 3-2.
Tim Seifert was the star of the match, scoring an impressive 93 runs off 50 balls, while Glenn Phillips contributed significantly with an unbeaten 65 from 38 deliveries. Earlier, India managed to post 191/8, thanks to half-centuries from Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer, despite a challenging start. Adam Milne's exceptional bowling, which included four wickets, prevented India from surpassing the 200-run mark.
New Zealand's innings began with an early loss as Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh dismissed opener Finn Allen for just two runs. However, Seifert and Daryl Mitchell quickly stabilized the innings, bringing the score to 25/1 by the end of the fourth over.
Seifert then took charge, scoring 20 runs in one over against Bhuvneshwar Kumar, leading New Zealand to a strong position of 59/1 at the end of the powerplay.
The hosts continued to dominate, reaching 81/1 after eight overs. India struck back when mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed Mitchell for 29 runs, but Seifert reached his half-century in the 10th over, helping New Zealand to 96/2.
Seifert and Phillips maintained the aggressive momentum, hitting four boundaries off Chakaravarthy in the 13th over, pushing the score to 138/2. New Zealand crossed the 150-run mark shortly after, as Indian bowlers struggled to contain the scoring.
India finally broke the 86-run partnership in the 16th over when Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled Seifert, who fell just short of a century with 93 runs. Seifert's innings included 11 fours and five sixes, putting New Zealand in a commanding position.
Phillips reached his fourth fifty of the series in the 17th over, joining an elite group of players who have scored four or more half-centuries in a bilateral series. He achieved this milestone against India in 2026.
New Zealand completed their chase comfortably, reaching the target of 192 with seven wickets remaining. Phillips finished with 65 runs, including eight fours and three sixes, securing a seven-wicket win for the Kiwis, although India still claimed the series 3-2.
Earlier, India's innings saw Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan recover from a shaky start, but Milne's four-wicket haul limited India to 191/8 in their 20 overs. India found themselves at 19/2 at one point, but a solid 93-run partnership between Iyer and Kishan helped stabilize the innings.
Kishan scored 61 runs off 31 balls, while Iyer contributed 50 runs off 23 balls. Despite contributions from Naman Dhir and Nitish Kumar Reddy, Milne's bowling proved decisive in restricting India's total.
India's innings began poorly, with Jacob Duffy conceding only two runs in the first over. Milne quickly took a wicket, leaving India at 2/1. Kishan and Iyer then began to build momentum, but the Kiwis' fielding errors allowed India to recover.
Kishan reached his half-century in just 28 balls, showcasing his aggressive batting style. However, after a series of wickets, India ended their innings at 191/8, with Arshdeep Singh and Prince Yadav remaining not out.
Milne was the standout bowler for New Zealand, finishing with figures of 4/19, while Tickner and Nathan also contributed with key wickets.
