New Zealand Wins Toss and Chooses to Bowl

Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: In the fifth and concluding T20I match at Seddon Park, New Zealand won the toss and decided to bowl first against India on Sunday.

India has already secured the series with a 3-1 lead. After a streak of three consecutive victories, they faced a setback with an 87-run defeat at Eden Park while attempting to chase a daunting target of 260 runs. This match presents New Zealand with an opportunity to conclude the fiercely contested series on a positive note, while India aims to reaffirm their status as the reigning T20I world champions.

During the toss, New Zealand's captain Mitchell Santner expressed, “I expected to lose the toss. We will bowl first. The pitch looks decent, and it usually plays well here. There might be some dew later on. Playing on smaller grounds in New Zealand poses its challenges, and we need to adapt quickly. The dimensions vary across the country, and if there’s bounce like at Eden Park, it could be beneficial.”

He further added, “Our batting has been strong throughout the series, and we’ve tweaked our bowling strategies. The last match had more assistance for seamers, so if conditions are similar, we hope for some bounce at Seddon Park. We have one change: Blair Tickner returns, and Matt Fisher is out.”

Indian captain Shreyas Iyer, during the toss, revealed that spinner Varun Chakravarthy and Bhuvneshwar Kumar would be included in the lineup, with Axar Patel missing out.

“It’s a significant occasion to play at this historic venue. We were also inclined to bat first to test ourselves, as we have chased in all four previous matches. We want to understand how the pitch behaves in the first innings. After the loss in Auckland, our bowlers had to adjust their plans against specific batsmen. Credit to Glenn Phillips for his outstanding performance. We must trust our instincts and bowl according to our strategy and the pitch conditions,” he stated.

“We have made two changes: Varun and Bhuvi are in. Varun has been eager for his chance, and he inspired us with a great speech in the huddle. He’s excited for this match,” he concluded.
