Netherlands Team Expresses Gratitude and Condemnation

The Netherlands football team expressed heartfelt thanks to its players, staff, and fans for their unwavering support throughout the World Cup. They emphasized that football serves as a unifying force, transcending backgrounds and origins.

In a statement, the team condemned the racist and discriminatory online comments directed at players following their elimination, asserting that such behavior is unacceptable in football, online platforms, or society at large.

The Netherlands Football Association shared their appreciation on social media, stating, "We thank the players, staff, and everyone involved for their dedication during this World Cup. Our gratitude extends to the supporters, whether in the stadium, at home, or anywhere else they cheered for Oranje. Football connects people, regardless of their background."

The statement continued, "We have observed online reactions where players have been subjected to racist and discriminatory treatment following our elimination. We firmly reject this. Racism and discrimination have no place in football, online, or in our society."

Morocco kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 aspirations alive with a nail-biting 3-2 victory in a penalty shootout against the Netherlands after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.

The Dutch players who missed their penalties during the shootout faced a barrage of racist and hateful comments online, as reported by the Dutch football association (KNVB).

Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville were among those who missed their shots, leading to Morocco's advancement after a tense match in Monterrey.

Rob Jetten, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, highlighted the unifying nature of football in the wake of the Dutch team's exit. He noted the positive atmosphere among Dutch fans, including the impressive fan marches, and acknowledged the Moroccan-Dutch community's celebration of Morocco's success.

He also expressed support for Cody Gakpo during a challenging time for him and his family, thanking both the Netherlands and Morocco teams and wishing Morocco luck in their upcoming match against Canada.

"After an exhilarating match between Oranje and the Atlas Lions, the World Cup journey ends for the Netherlands. It was remarkable to witness how sports unite people. The way Dutch fans captured hearts with their massive fan walks and how the Moroccan-Dutch community celebrated their well-deserved victory positively was inspiring. Thank you, @OnsOranje, and best of luck to @EnMaroc in your next match against Canada," Jetten posted on social media.

Morocco is set to face Canada in their first Round of 16 match at NRG Stadium on Saturday, continuing their remarkable journey in the FIFA World Cup.
