Netherlands Dominates Sweden with 5-1 Victory in FIFA World Cup 2026
Netherlands Secures First Win in World Cup
In a stunning display, the Netherlands triumphed over Sweden with a score of 5-1, marking their inaugural victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in Texas. Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo each netted two goals, showcasing the Dutch team's offensive prowess.
Brobbey, who came in for Crysencio Summerville, made an immediate impact by scoring twice within the first 17 minutes, achieving the fourth-fastest brace in World Cup history.
As the match progressed, Sweden began to find their rhythm and created several opportunities towards the end of the first half. However, Gakpo took charge after halftime, scoring two goals in just seven minutes, solidifying the Netherlands' dominance.
Anthony Elanga managed to score for Sweden just before the hour mark, but Summerville later added a fifth goal for the Netherlands, bringing them closer to advancing to the knockout stage.
The Dutch opened the scoring early, with Brobbey finishing a well-coordinated play involving Tijjani Reijnders and Gakpo, who assisted from the left side.
Sweden's Viktor Gyokeres attempted to respond, testing goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Brobbey quickly doubled his tally by converting a cross from Denzel Dumfries.
Despite Sweden's attempts to pressure, the Dutch maintained control, with Verbruggen making several crucial saves.
After the break, Gakpo extended the lead by tapping in another Dumfries cross and then executing a clever reverse shot past Kristoffer Nordfeldt.
Graham Potter brought in Elanga after Sweden fell behind 4-0, and he quickly found the net following a precise pass from Alexander Isak.
However, any chance of a comeback was dashed when Summerville scored a spectacular goal in the 89th minute, ensuring the Netherlands remained in contention for the knockout rounds.
