In New Chandigarh, Punjab, Nehal Wadhera, a batter for Punjab Kings (PBKS), has expressed his appreciation for head coach Ricky Ponting, highlighting how his leadership fosters a motivating atmosphere within the team. The 25-year-old left-handed player noted that Ponting's approach encourages players to strive for personal growth and learn from their peers.
Wadhera shared in an interview that being surrounded by seasoned coaches and experienced teammates naturally inspires younger players to elevate their performance standards.
He remarked, "Having positive individuals around you leads to positive thinking. There's a saying, 'You are the average of the five people you associate with.'"
The PBKS player acknowledged the significant role of the franchise's support staff and senior players, including captain Shreyas Iyer, assistant coach Brad Haddin, and bowling coach James Hopes, along with teammates like Arshdeep Singh and Prabhsimran Singh.
"When you have such influential figures like Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer around, it motivates you to excel for the IPL and your country," he stated.
Wadhera emphasized that players often learn by observing rather than through direct instruction, especially when senior players set a strong example.
"You pick up on things when you see others working hard and striving to improve. If someone is dedicated, you don't want to be the least motivated person in the room," he explained.
He noted that witnessing teammates commit extra time to practice often inspires others to do the same.
"Even if you're feeling lazy, seeing someone else's hard work can push you to get up and put in extra effort. This is how players lead by example without needing to say anything," he added.
Wadhera specifically praised captain Shreyas Iyer for his disciplined work ethic, mentioning how Iyer's dedication to training, fitness, and nutrition has a profound impact on younger players.
"Shreyas Iyer arrives early for practice, focuses on his training and diet. These are lessons that senior players impart without needing to verbalize them," he noted.
He stressed that consistency and meticulousness are crucial in a sport as competitive as cricket.
"Cricket is highly competitive; you can't take anything for granted. You must check every box," Wadhera remarked.
During the IPL 2025 season, Wadhera had a successful run, scoring 369 runs in 16 matches with an average of 30.75 and a strike rate exceeding 145. However, he faced challenges in the 2026 season, managing only 65 runs.
Despite his struggles, Wadhera shared that Ponting reached out to him personally to offer encouragement when his confidence was low due to his performance. He recalled Ponting saying, "You are our senior player, we back you, and you just have to express yourself and enjoy the game."
Wadhera believes such support can only come from a coach who has experienced the ups and downs of international cricket.
"Words like these can significantly boost your confidence. This kind of reassurance typically comes from an experienced coach who understands these challenges," he concluded.
Wadhera joined PBKS after being released by Mumbai ahead of the 2025 mega auction. He entered the bidding with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, attracting interest from franchises like Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants, before being acquired by PBKS for Rs 4.20 crore.
This move proved advantageous for both Wadhera and the franchise, as he had his best IPL season in 2025, contributing significantly to PBKS's journey to the finals with his impressive performance.
Currently, PBKS is conducting a five-day off-season training camp in New Chandigarh, which began on August 11 and will conclude on August 15. The camp includes six players, such as Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh, and is overseen by the franchise's coaching staff, led by Trevor Gonsalves.
