Neeru Dhanda's Remarkable Achievement

Jind (Haryana) [India], September 30: Neeru Dhanda's groundbreaking gold medal victory in shooting at the Asian Games has garnered immense pride, with her father, Suresh, expressing his joy and sharing insights into her journey into the sport. Initially, Neeru practiced with a borrowed gun due to financial constraints faced by her family.

Her achievement is a significant milestone for Indian shooting, as she became the first woman from the country to secure an individual gold medal in trap shooting at the Asian Games. Neeru also set a new Asian record during her debut, scoring 28 out of 30 in the qualification round.

In an interview, Suresh shared, “I am filled with happiness. The entire village is celebrating this achievement, not just our family. As a farmer, this news has brought joy to everyone around us.”

Reflecting on her entry into shooting, Suresh mentioned that it was the encouragement from wrestler Somveer, her maternal cousin, that inspired her to pursue the sport, even when they lacked their own equipment.

“Somveer played a crucial role in her journey. We didn’t own a gun; she practiced with someone else's. We never imagined she would achieve such heights,” he noted.

Earlier this week, Neeru also contributed to a silver medal win in the women's trap team event alongside teammates Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer, with India scoring 328 points, just behind China’s 346 points, while Kuwait secured bronze with 325 points.

Neeru was the standout performer for India in the team event, achieving a score of 118 out of 125.

Following her individual gold medal success, Neeru Dhanda is set to compete in the mixed-team trap event with Kynan Chenai on day 11 of the Asian Games.
