Neeraj Chopra Aims for Gold in Javelin
On July 31, Glasgow will witness India's star athlete Neeraj Chopra as he competes in the men's javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games 2026. The former Olympic champion secured his spot in the final with a throw of 79.61 meters during the qualification round, finishing fifth overall despite challenging conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, according to reports from Olympics.com.
To clinch the gold, Neeraj will need to elevate his performance, as he faces tough competition from defending Commonwealth champion Arshad Nadeem, Sri Lankan athlete Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott, and former world champion Anderson Peters.
Joining him in the 12-man final are fellow Indian athletes Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh.
Boxing Success for India
In another highlight, ten Indian boxers are set to compete in the semi-finals, each already assured of at least a bronze medal. This marks India's most successful boxing campaign in the history of the Commonwealth Games.
The boxers include Sakshi Chaudhary (women's 51kg), Preeti Pawar (women's 54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (women's 57kg), Priya Ghanghas (women's 60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (women's 70kg), Lovlina Borgohain (women's 75kg), Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (men's 55kg), Sachin Siwach (men's 60kg), Ankush Panghal (men's 80kg), and Narender Berwal (men's +90kg), all aiming for a place in the finals.
Athletics and Judo Events
In athletics, Tejaswin Shankar is targeting a podium finish in the decathlon after concluding Thursday's events in second place overall. Additionally, Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh Kumar T will compete in the men's 400m hurdles final, both aiming for medal contention.
Judo will also feature in India's campaign on Friday, with Harsh Singh (men's 60kg), Shraddha Kadubal Chopade (women's 52kg), Rohit Basir Majgul (men's 66kg), Asmita Dey (women's 48kg), and Yamini Mourya (women's 57kg) set to begin their respective matches.
Cycling and Bowls Competitions
Indian cyclists will continue their track events, participating in the men's 4,000m individual pursuit, keirin, and elimination race, striving for strong finishes.
In men's pairs bowls sectional play, Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar will face Ian Barnes and Oliver Thompson. With a crucial match against England looming on Saturday, the Indian duo must secure points to maintain their competitive edge.
