Neeraj Chopra Discusses Coaching Change and Injury Challenges Ahead of 2026 Season
Neeraj Chopra's Coaching Transition
Neeraj Chopra has opened up about his decision to part ways with renowned javelin coach Jan Zelenzy as he prepares for his return to competitive athletics after a nine-month hiatus. The 28-year-old athlete is set to kick off his season at the Doha Diamond League on June 19, 2026, at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium. Neeraj and Zelenzy, who is celebrated as one of the greatest javelin throwers of all time, began their collaboration just a year ago. Zelenzy took over coaching duties from Klaus Bartoniet.
Chopra has now chosen to work with Jai Choudhary, a coach who has been familiar with him for many years. He expressed a desire to focus on refining his natural technique. “After the Tokyo Olympics, Jan and I were concentrating on very specific aspects, but I realized I needed to maintain consistency throughout the season, which was challenging. Following the Tokyo World Championships, I felt it was time to explore my own ideas and methods. Now, I’m training with someone who has been a mentor since my early days. He understands my journey over the past 15-16 years, and I appreciate this collaborative approach,” Neeraj shared during a pre-event press conference in Doha.
Reflections on World Championships
Mistake To Compete At World Championships
Neeraj also reflected on his experience at the World Championships, where he faced significant injury challenges. He admitted that participating in the event, held in September last year, was a misstep. The two-time Olympic medalist finished in 8th place, marking the end of a remarkable five-year streak of podium finishes. “I had been dealing with injuries leading up to Tokyo. We managed to address them, but competing was not the best choice. I was aware of my issues but still decided to participate since it was the final competition of the season. As athletes, we often deal with minor injuries. We try to manage one issue only to encounter another. I had problems with my ankle and shoulder. My team and I worked diligently to address every concern,” Neeraj explained.
