Chopra Secures Final Spot in Javelin

In Glasgow, Neeraj Chopra expressed his contentment with qualifying for the javelin final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, despite facing tough weather conditions. Alongside Chopra, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh also earned their spots in the men's javelin final after a qualification round that was significantly impacted by strong winds.

Following the qualification, Chopra noted the cold and unpredictable winds that complicated the throwers' ability to gauge their throws accurately. Nevertheless, his throw of 79.61 meters was sufficient to meet his primary goal of qualifying for the final.

"I’m pleased to have made it to the final, which was my qualification objective. The conditions were quite challenging, with both cold and windy weather. My throw of 79 meters was satisfactory, but it was tough to throw accurately due to the wind shifting directions unexpectedly," he remarked.

Chopra acknowledged that the adverse conditions affected all competitors, as none achieved the automatic qualification mark. He was delighted that all three Indian athletes progressed to the final.

Typically known for securing qualification with a single impressive throw, Neeraj had to wait until his second attempt to clinch his place in the final. He began with a throw of 76.28 meters but improved to 79.61 meters on his second attempt, finishing fifth in the qualification rankings. He chose not to make a final attempt after confirming his position among the top 12.

Yash Vir Singh kicked off his performance with a throw of 73.89 meters, gradually improving throughout the round. His final attempt yielded a personal best of 78.36 meters, securing him the 10th spot in the final.

Rohit Yadav also qualified with a steady performance, starting with a throw of 77.04 meters and achieving his best of 78.37 meters in the second round, placing him ninth overall. He opted out of his final attempt, feeling confident about his qualification.

Sri Lanka's Rumesh Pathirage led the qualification with an impressive throw of 82.84 meters, followed by Grenada's Anderson Peters at 81.29 meters. South Africa's Douw Smit (80.64 meters) and England's Ben East (80.38 meters) also surpassed the 80-meter mark.

Olympics 2024 gold medalist Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan qualified in seventh place with a throw of 78.63 meters, while several prominent athletes faced difficulties due to the challenging conditions.

The final qualification results saw Neeraj in fifth, Rohit in ninth, and Yash Vir Singh in tenth, with all three Indian competitors advancing to the medal round.
