Navneet Kaur's Stellar Performance at FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers

In New Delhi, veteran forward Navneet Kaur played a crucial role in India's successful journey at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers held in Hyderabad, Telangana, where she emerged as the tournament's third-highest goal scorer with four goals.

Her significant contributions were vital in propelling India's offensive strategy throughout the competition, earning her the title of 'Player of the Tournament' for her exceptional displays, as reported by a media release.

Navneet notably netted a hat-trick during India's impressive 4-1 win against Wales, showcasing her impact on the team's achievements.

The Indian Women's Hockey Team clinched a spot in the upcoming FIH Hockey World Cup, set to take place in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2026, after securing a Silver medal at the recent qualifiers in Hyderabad.

Despite a 0-2 defeat to England in the final match, India showcased a strong overall performance, achieving key victories against teams like Uruguay, Wales, and Italy.

Reflecting on the experience of playing in Hyderabad, Navneet remarked, "It was a great experience for us, especially since it was our first time in Hyderabad. The support from fans and the quality of the ground were excellent. With a new coaching setup, we had many new things to learn on the field. Our primary goal was to play cohesively as a team, understand each other's strengths, and build that connection."

She further added, "From the start of the tournament, our main objective was to qualify for the FIH Hockey World Cup. Additionally, achieving a high finish in the tournament was crucial for boosting the team's confidence moving forward."

Discussing her individual performances, Navneet credited her teammates and coaching staff for providing her the freedom to express her skills on the field. "As a senior player, I feel a responsibility to lead. My aim is to utilize my strengths, whether it's creating chances in the circle or using my dribbling to open up the game. The support from my teammates and coaches gives me the confidence to play naturally. Even if something doesn't work, I know I can try again," she explained.

The tournament also highlighted the emergence of several young players, which Navneet believes reflects the positive atmosphere fostered by the new coaching staff.

She stated, "It wasn't solely about focusing on young talent but also about giving chances to those who earned their spot through performance. Some youngsters excelled in the Hero Hockey India League and were selected for the senior team. They had the right attitude, were eager to learn, and understood the team's needs. The coaches encouraged them to play freely and focus on their strengths, which contributed to their success."

Looking ahead, Navneet emphasized the need for the team to enhance their finishing skills after creating numerous scoring opportunities during the tournament. "If we analyze the tournament and the final, we had enough chances. One area we need to improve is converting those opportunities in the final third. Finishing those chances will be crucial moving forward. Overall, the team's performance and effort were commendable," she noted.

The Indian Women's Hockey Team is now gearing up for the FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands in 2026, with several international tours planned in the upcoming months.

"We have several tours lined up leading to the FIH Hockey World Cup. We will be playing competitive matches and will use these opportunities to enhance our skills and be fully prepared for the major tournament," Navneet concluded.
