Nathan Lyon Surpasses Glenn McGrath in Test Wickets for Australia
Nathan Lyon Achieves Milestone in Ashes Test
Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon has made history by overtaking fast bowler Glenn McGrath to become the second-highest wicket-taker in Australia's Test cricket history. This remarkable feat was accomplished during the second day of the third Ashes Test against England at Adelaide Oval, an achievement Lyon humbly acknowledged.
In the 10th over of England's first innings, Lyon claimed two wickets, dismissing Ollie Pope for just three runs off ten balls, followed by the crucial wicket of Ben Duckett in the same over.
Lyon's Impressive Statistics
With 564 wickets at an average of 30.09 from 141 Test matches, including a best performance of 8/50, Lyon has now surpassed McGrath, who took 562 wickets at an average of 21.64 over 124 Tests, with a best of 8/24. Lyon's record includes 26 instances of taking four wickets, 24 five-wicket hauls, and five ten-wicket matches. The all-time leading wicket-taker for Australia remains the late Shane Warne, who achieved 708 wickets at an average of 25.41 across 145 Tests.
A Proud Moment for Lyon
Lyon has now surpassed McGrath as the sixth-highest wicket-taker in international cricket. After the day's play, he expressed his pride in achieving this milestone, noting that both McGrath and Shane Warne have been his idols since childhood. In a press conference following the match, Lyon stated, "I have always looked up to Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath as my heroes. Surpassing or equaling Glenn is a moment of great pride for me. It's a memory I will cherish throughout my career and beyond, as it is incredibly special to me."
Acknowledging Team Support
He further emphasized that this achievement was made possible through the support of his teammates, describing it as a proud moment that he will remember throughout his career. Lyon remarked, "Without the players on the other side and my teammates, I wouldn't have been able to achieve this. So yes, it is a moment filled with humility and immense pride for me."
