New Delhi, August 10: Indian boxer Narender Berwal, who clinched a silver medal in the men’s 90+ kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, recounted a fascinating moment from his boxing journey during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in New Delhi on Sunday.

Berwal reminisced about a conversation he had with a Pakistani boxer following his victory at the 2015 World Military Games.

During this interaction, Berwal shared with PM Modi that the Pakistani boxer expressed astonishment at the frequent occurrence of the name 'Narendra' in his life.

“The Pakistani boxer remarked, ‘Your name is Narender, your coach's name is Narender, and your Prime Minister's name is Narendra. I have developed a dislike for the name Narendra,’” Berwal recounted in a video posted on PM Modi's YouTube channel.

Prime Minister Modi engaged with Indian athletes who earned medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, praising their commitment and efforts in elevating the nation's prestige.

India achieved its best-ever boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games, securing a total of 10 medals, which surpassed the previous record of six gold medals held by England (1934 and 2018) and Canada (1986).

Concluding its Commonwealth Games journey in Glasgow, India amassed 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze, finishing fourth in the overall medal tally.

The Glasgow Games wrapped up after 11 days of competition, with Scotland officially transferring the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which is set to host the centenary edition of this multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.
