India Clinches Gold in Women's Cricket at Asian Games

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], September 24: After leading her team to victory against Sri Lanka and securing the gold medal in women's cricket at the Asian Games, Indian fast bowler Nandani Sharma shared her approach during the tournament: keeping things straightforward and focusing on the fundamentals.


With remarkable performances from Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, India amassed an impressive score, while the bowlers effectively dismantled the Sri Lankan batting lineup, restricting them to just 69 runs. This resulted in a commanding 147-run victory in the gold medal match held in Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday.


In an interview, Nandani expressed her joy about winning the gold, stating, "It feels amazing, and I am incredibly proud, especially since it was India's first gold medal."


Reflecting on the guidance from captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the 25-year-old noted, "We kept everything simple; it was essential to adhere to the basics. I didn't need to overthink; I just followed the instructions given to me. Everyone was clear about their roles and responsibilities."


Nandani also mentioned how much she enjoyed playing under Harmanpreet's leadership.


"I plan to take a few days off to relax and travel," she concluded.


Throughout the tournament, Nandani participated in three matches, claiming three wickets with an average of 18.00, including her best performance of 3/25 against Bangladesh in the semifinals. Prior to this tournament, she was part of India's Asia Cup-winning squad, where she took seven wickets in five matches at an impressive average of 9.28, with her best figures being 3/18 against Thailand.


In her T20I career for India, she has taken 17 wickets at an average of 17.17, with her best figures being 3/18.


In the gold medal match, India chose to bat first. Contributions from Smriti Mandhana (79 runs off 45 balls, including five fours and seven sixes), Shafali Verma (48 runs off 29 balls, with three fours), and Richa Ghosh (49* runs off 22 balls, featuring six fours and three sixes) propelled India to a total of 219/3.


On the bowling front, Deepti Sharma (3/6), Sree Charani (2/13), and Shreyanka Patil (2/9) were instrumental in bowling Sri Lanka out for just 69 runs.
