Naib Subedar Sarvesh Anil Kushare, an athlete from the Indian Army, has achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new national high jump record of 2.31 meters at the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar.

This accomplishment surpasses the previous record of 2.29 meters, which was held by Tejaswin Shankar from New Delhi since 2018. With this jump, Kushare has also qualified for the upcoming Asian Games, making him the first Indian to successfully clear the prestigious 2.30-meter mark.

In recent months, numerous athletes from the Indian Army have excelled, securing gold medals in various national and international competitions. Following Kushare's victory, the Indian Army expressed their pride, stating, 'The gold rush continues.' They extended their best wishes for his upcoming participation in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, encouraging him to soar high and bring home further accolades.

The current Asian Games high jump record stands at 2.35 meters, established by Qatar's Mutaz Barsham in September 2014 during the event held in Incheon, South Korea. Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Games record is 2.36 meters, set by Clarence Saunders of Bermuda in February 1990 in Auckland, Australia. The world record for high jump is an impressive 2.45 meters, achieved by Cuba's Javier Sotomayor in July 1993 at the International Athletics Meet in Salamanca, Spain.

Hailing from Nashik district in Maharashtra, Kushare enlisted in the Army in 2016 and is currently stationed at the Artillery Center in Bengaluru. He made his international debut at the 13th South Asian Games in Nepal in December 2019, where he clinched a gold medal in the men's high jump. Throughout his career, he has garnered multiple medals in both national and international competitions.

The Indian Army's Mission Olympics program aims to train elite athletes at the Army Sports Institute, which collaborates with the Sports Authority of India to develop sporting talent.

Established in July 2001, the Army Sports Institute serves as a multi-disciplinary center dedicated to identifying and nurturing the athletic potential of personnel within the Armed Forces, while also recruiting promising athletes from across the nation.
