Mumbai Indians Make IPL History with Three Different Captains
Mumbai Indians' Historic Captaincy Change
In a remarkable turn of events, the Mumbai Indians (MI) made history as Hardik Pandya returned to captain the team in their IPL 2026 match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on May 20. This match marked the third consecutive game in which MI has had a different captain, following Jasprit Bumrah's leadership against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Suryakumar Yadav's role against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Hardik had been sidelined for the previous three matches due to a back injury, during which Suryakumar stepped in as captain. He was unable to play against PBKS in Dharamshala for personal reasons, allowing Bumrah to make his debut as captain.
MI's Unique Achievement in IPL
MI has become only the second franchise in IPL history to utilize three different captains in three consecutive matches within the same season. The only other team to achieve this feat was the now-defunct Pune Warriors India (PWI) during the 2013 season, where Ross Taylor, Angelo Matthews, and Aaron Finch took turns leading the team in three successive games against CSK, SRH, and Kings XI Punjab. That season also marked the end of PWI's participation in the league.
Notably, there have been only five instances of a team employing three captains in a single season. MI stands out as the only team to have accomplished this three times, all with Indian captains, while PWI is the only team to have used three overseas captains in one season.

MI's Leadership in 2026
Throughout the 13 matches MI has played this season, Hardik Pandya has captained the team in nine games, missing four due to various reasons. He was absent for the second match against Delhi Capitals (DC) due to illness and also missed games against Lucknow Super Giants, RCB, and PBKS. Suryakumar Yadav took charge for the first three matches of the season.
