Mumbai Indians Prepare for IPL 2026

As the IPL 2026 season approaches, the Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, are eager to break their five-year title drought and solidify their status as the most successful franchise in IPL history.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra shared insights on JioHotstar regarding the team's dependence on star bowler Jasprit Bumrah and the complexities of selecting their overseas players.

Chopra emphasized that Bumrah's presence inherently brings pressure, as he is the team's most influential bowler. His four overs are crucial, spanning the powerplay, middle overs, and death overs, making him invaluable to MI.

He pointed out that regardless of the performances from bowlers like Trent Boult or Deepak Chahar, the onus will still be on Bumrah. If fit, MI's pace attack will likely include Bumrah, Boult, Chahar, and Hardik Pandya, with Corbin Bosch as a backup all-rounder.

Bumrah stands as the second-highest wicket-taker in MI's IPL history, boasting 186 wickets in 148 matches at an impressive average of 22.12.

Chopra remarked, "With Jasprit Bumrah, pressure is a given. He consistently makes an impact, secures wickets, and limits the opposition's scoring. His four overs are crucial for MI, and that pressure is constant."

He further noted that even if Boult performs well, the pressure on Bumrah remains unchanged. MI will likely want Boult to play if he is fit, as his ability to swing the new ball is essential, alongside Chahar. Shardul Thakur could step in for Chahar if needed, but that doesn't guarantee a starting position.

Chopra also mentioned that MI is expected to retain Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock as their opening pair due to their effective left-right combination. The challenge lies in incorporating England's Will Jacks into the lineup, especially with Sherfane Rutherford also vying for a position as a lower-order batter who can bowl.

He highlighted the necessity for MI to field at least two overseas bowlers, with Boult almost certain to play and either Mitchell Santner or Allah Ghazanfar likely to join him. Corbin Bosch is another option, presenting MI with a 'problem of plenty' in terms of team selection.

Chopra concluded, "MI values their left-right combination at the top of the order. I anticipate seeing Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock opening again, as they were instrumental in their 2019 and 2020 victories. The real question is how to fit Will Jacks into the mix, especially with Sherfane Rutherford's capabilities as a lower-order batsman and bowler. This is a good dilemma to have, but it requires careful consideration."

He reiterated the need for MI to include at least two overseas bowlers, with Boult guaranteed a spot and one of Santner or Ghazanfar likely to join him, alongside Bosch. This selection process will be challenging, but it is a desirable situation for most teams.

The Mumbai Indians' squad for the IPL 2026 season includes: Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ryan Rickleton, Robin Minz, Raj Bawa, Raghu Sharma, Mitchell Santner, Corbin Bosch, Naman Dhir, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, Allah Ghazanfar, Ashwani Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Will Jacks, Sherfane Rutherford, Mayank Markande, Shardul Thakur, Quinton de Kock, Danish Malewar, Mohammad Izhar, Atharva Ankolekar, and Mayank Rawat.
