Mumbai Indians' Disappointing Season: Coach Jayawardene Reflects on Final Over Decision
Mumbai Indians' Struggles in IPL 2023
Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], May 11: After their defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which officially knocked them out of playoff contention, Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene discussed the choice to have the inexperienced Raj Angad Bawa bowl the crucial final over while defending a total of 167 runs. This season has proven to be another disappointment for the team.
Since their last trophy win in 2020, MI has struggled to reclaim their former glory. Despite retaining many players from their successful past, the team, led by Hardik Pandya, has underperformed significantly, facing the possibility of finishing in the lower half of the standings for the third time this decade.
During the post-match press conference, Jayawardene addressed Bawa's final over, which resulted in 15 runs being conceded, including a six from Bhuvneshwar Kumar after he dismissed the powerful Romario Shepherd. Jayawardene noted that Bawa is a "decent bowler" and that all the experienced bowlers had already completed their overs. His ability to execute wide yorkers in practice earned him the trust of stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav.
"We had limited spinners available. Surya had faith in himself, and Raj is a capable bowler. He consistently executes those wide yorkers in training. He maintained his line and took the wicket of Romario Shepherd, who was also under pressure. We fought hard; it was a close match. We should have executed better in the end," he stated, as reported by MI's official website.
Jayawardene described the season as "disappointing," acknowledging that despite having opportunities, the team lacked the necessary consistency and performance.
"We were just a couple of wins away from being in contention for the playoffs. Unfortunately, we couldn't secure those wins, and today's match exemplified where we fell short," he added.
MI batted first, but a brilliant performance from Bhuvneshwar Kumar left them struggling at 28/3. An 82-run partnership between Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma helped stabilize the innings, but the final two overs saw Raj and Corbin Bosch manage only 11 runs, potentially leaving them short.
"We did our best. The pitch was uneven at that stage. I felt there was some dew at night. Our players were attempting big shots without knowing what a competitive score would be on this wicket, leading to several dot balls. We simply weren't good enough today," the coach explained.
Jayawardene also mentioned that several players were dealing with minor injuries, and some, like Will Jacks, were unavailable for most matches. Key players, including Hardik Sharma, Rohit Sharma, and Mitchell Santner, also faced injury issues during the tournament.
"We had players with minor injuries, some were unavailable, and the changes we made were necessary. Tactically, we would have preferred to have a few more options. There are no excuses. We have a talented squad, and we needed to step up and perform. Unfortunately, that didn't happen," he remarked.
Despite the challenges, the former Sri Lankan star remains confident in his team's quality, highlighting the commitment of core players like Rohit, Suryakumar, Hardik, Tilak Varma, and Jasprit Bumrah.
"They have shown great dedication and effort. Rohit has been injured but continues to give his best. They came here after winning the World Cup. This core group is invaluable to us," he concluded.
In the match, RCB won the toss and chose to bowl first, a decision that paid off as MI quickly fell to 28/3, thanks to Bhuvneshwar's exceptional bowling. However, Naman Dhir (47 off 32 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and Tilak Varma (57 off 42, with three fours and two sixes) steadied the innings, leading MI to a total of 166/7 in 20 overs.
Bhuvneshwar was the standout bowler for RCB, taking 4 wickets for 23 runs, while Josh Hazlewood (1/33) and Romario Shepherd (1/18 in three overs) contributed effectively.
During RCB's chase, they lost Virat Kohli (0) for the second consecutive golden duck and found themselves at 39/3, with Deepak Chahar (2/33) controlling the game. However, Krunal Pandya (73 off 46 balls, with four boundaries and five sixes) formed a 55-run partnership with Jacob Bethell (26 off 27 balls, with two fours) and another 38-run partnership with Jitesh Sharma (18), reaching a remarkable fifty. Corbin Bosch (4/26) and Allah Ghazanfar (1/33) took crucial wickets, including Krunal, leaving RCB at 149/7 in 18 overs.
Romario Shepherd (4 runs off 11 balls) struggled against Jasprit Bumrah (0/20), leaving RCB needing 12 runs in the final over. A series of extras from Raj Angad Bawa and a six from Bhuvneshwar eased the pressure, despite Romario's dismissal, allowing RCB to clinch a last-ball victory, with Rasikh Salam Dar (3*) scoring the winning runs.
With seven wins and four losses, RCB currently leads the points table with 14 points, while MI sits at ninth place with three wins and eight losses, officially eliminated from playoff contention alongside Lucknow Super Giants.
