Celebrating Mumbai's Sports Journalism

On March 4, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) introduced the Honours Board dedicated to sports journalists from Mumbai during a special event held at the Balasaheb Thackeray Press Box in Wankhede Stadium. This ceremony was graced by prominent figures from both the cricketing and media sectors.

The Honours Board serves to acknowledge and appreciate the significant role that Mumbai's sports journalists have played in the development, documentation, and promotion of cricket within the city. This initiative is a tribute to those media professionals who have devoted many years to covering the sport and influencing its narrative, as stated in an MCA release.

The event was presided over by MCA President Ajinkya Naik, along with Secretary Prof. Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar and Joint Secretary Nilesh Bhosle, who were joined by members of the Apex Council and several veteran sports journalists.

During his address, MCA President Ajinkya Naik emphasized the crucial influence of the media in shaping the story of Mumbai cricket and enhancing its bond with fans through the years. He remarked, “The legacy of cricket in Mumbai has been crafted not just by the players on the field but also by the journalists who have passionately documented its evolution. The MCA holds its enduring relationship with the city’s sports journalists in high regard. The Honours Board stands as a modest yet significant acknowledgment of their commitment and contributions to our city’s cricket.”

MCA Secretary Prof. Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar further noted, “Sports journalists have been integral to Mumbai cricket for many years. Their continuous coverage has safeguarded the rich history of cricket in Mumbai, making the sport more accessible to the public. With this Honours Board, the MCA recognizes their dedication and long-standing ties to Mumbai cricket.”

The unveiling of this board represents a meaningful step by the MCA to enhance its relationship with the media community and to honor those who have consistently advocated for and supported Mumbai cricket over the years.

The Honours Board will be permanently displayed at the Balasaheb Thackeray Press Box, serving as a lasting tribute to the sports journalists of the city.
