Celebrating Cricketing Icons in Mumbai

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 9: A significant chapter in the history of Mumbai cricket was written today as the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) honored cricket legends Ravi Shastri, Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji at the renowned Wankhede Stadium, acknowledging their immense contributions to both Mumbai and Indian cricket.

The unveiling ceremony was graced by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who dedicated a stand to Ravi Shastri and named stadium gates after Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji, as per an official announcement.

Notable attendees included Cabinet Minister Ashish Shelar, MCA President Ajinkya Naik, cricket icons Sunil Gavaskar and Dilip Vengsarkar, along with MCA Apex Council members and other cricketing personalities. The MCA also recognized Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of the T20 World Cup-winning team.

The Level 1 stand situated beneath the Press Box has been renamed the Ravi Shastri Stand, honoring a key figure in Indian cricket. Shastri, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning squad, has made lasting contributions as a player, captain, coach, and commentator.

Gates No. 3, 5, and 6 have been designated as the Dilip Sardesai Gate, Eknath Solkar Gate, and Diana Edulji Gate, respectively, celebrating the legacies of these three Mumbai cricket legends. Sardesai, known as India's 'crisis man', was celebrated for his reliability and significant contributions to the sport.

Solkar, recognized as one of the best close-in fielders, played a crucial role in India's achievements with his all-around abilities and fearless style. Edulji, a trailblazer for women's cricket, captained the national team and later made substantial contributions as an administrator.

Fadnavis commended the MCA for this initiative, stating, “This is a wonderful way to honor our icons. Naming gates and stands after those who have made history ensures their memories and contributions to the game are preserved forever. Such an initiative is truly commendable and perhaps unique to Wankhede Stadium through the MCA.”

Ashish Shelar echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of honoring Mumbai's cricketing heritage. “Our cricketing family, particularly Mumbai cricket, which has captivated the world, deserves to recognize and respect such remarkable players appropriately. This sentiment was shared by all MCA members, and today is a landmark day,” he remarked.

Ajinkya Naik expressed that Wankhede Stadium symbolizes the heart of Mumbai cricket and its lasting legacy. “By honoring Ravi Shastri, Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar, and Diana Edulji in this manner, we ensure their contributions are forever part of Mumbai cricket's rich history. This initiative reflects the MCA's dedication to preserving our cricketing legacy while inspiring future generations,” he stated.

Ravi Shastri expressed his gratitude for the honor at Wankhede Stadium, stating, “When you see the names displayed here, including Tendulkar, Vengsarkar, Gavaskar, and Sharma, it reflects a tradition-rich association. Achieving this recognition requires hard work; there are no shortcuts for aspiring players.”

Diana Edulji shared her joy, stating, “It’s a significant moment for me and my family to be here for the unveiling of the gate in my name. I sincerely thank the Mumbai Cricket Association for their commendable support of women's cricket and the respect they have shown to players over the years.”

The families of Sardesai and Solkar were present and expressed their gratitude to the MCA for this honor.

This initiative by the MCA continues to uphold the legacy of Mumbai cricket by celebrating those who have shaped it, ensuring their stories resonate with future generations.
