Mumbai City FC Secures Narrow Win Over Mohun Bagan in ISL Clash
Mumbai City FC Triumphs in ISL Showdown
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], March 20: A first-half goal from Noufal PN, combined with an impressive performance by goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa, led Mumbai City FC to a 1-0 victory against Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2025-26 at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on Friday.
This win propelled Mumbai City FC to the top of the league standings, remaining unbeaten and gaining a one-point lead over Mohun Bagan Super Giant, who fell to second place with 13 points, as reported.
Phurba Lachenpa earned the Player of the Match title due to his crucial saves throughout the game.
Mohun Bagan's head coach Sergio Lobera made two adjustments to his starting lineup, introducing Mehtab Singh and Jason Cummings in midfield. Meanwhile, Mumbai City FC's coach Petr Kratky made one change, bringing Jorge Pereyra Diaz into the starting eleven.
The match kicked off with high energy, as Mohun Bagan controlled possession early on, while Mumbai City looked to strike on the counterattack. Noufal PN had the first shot in the sixth minute but missed the target after receiving a pass from captain Lallianzuala Chhangte.
The Mariners maintained their possession, with right winger Liston Colaco's attempt blocked by Mumbai City's center-back Nuno Reis in the 19th minute. The Islanders quickly countered three minutes later, with Chhangte facing goalkeeper Vishal Kaith one-on-one, but Kaith made a crucial save before Mehtab Singh cleared the ball.
In the 27th minute, the Islanders took the lead through a well-executed team play. A quick transition from right to left involving four Mumbai City players found Noufal PN in a favorable position, and he calmly finished with his right foot into the far corner, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Mohun Bagan pressed for an equalizer but faced repeated denials from Lachenpa. The Mumbai goalkeeper made a spectacular diving save in the 40th minute to stop a header from Jason Cummings and followed it up with several more saves against Dimitri Petratos from long range.
At the other end, the Islanders also posed a threat, with Chhangte, Jorge Ortiz, and Pereyra Diaz testing Kaith, who made consecutive saves to keep his team in contention. Despite the back-and-forth action, Mumbai City held a slim 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second half mirrored the first, with Mohun Bagan dominating possession while Mumbai City remained dangerous on the counter. Colaco tested Lachenpa early in the half, while Vikram Pratap Singh forced a save from Kaith.
Maclaren came close in the 60th minute but missed the target, and shortly after, Petratos thought he had equalized from a rebound, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside. Lachenpa continued to shine, making another critical save in the 69th minute to deny Mohun Bagan.
As the match neared its conclusion, the Mariners maintained pressure, with Sahal Abdul Samad narrowly missing from distance in the 90th minute. Petratos also had a late free-kick opportunity but failed to hit the target.
Despite their relentless efforts and possession dominance, Mohun Bagan could not find the equalizer, as Mumbai City's well-organized defense held strong.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Mumbai City FC, ending Mohun Bagan Super Giant's unbeaten streak and elevating Mumbai City to the top of the table as they head into the international break.
