Preparation for T20 Mumbai League
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 21: The defending champions, MSC Maratha Royals, are ramping up their preparations for the upcoming Season 4 of the T20 Mumbai League, set to take place at the renowned Wankhede Stadium from June 1 to 13.
This season will coincide with the inaugural T20 Mumbai Women’s League, promising to feature prominent figures from Mumbai's cricket scene alongside emerging talents.
In an interview, MSC Maratha Royals captain Siddhesh Lad emphasized the team's commitment to retaining their title, stating that they have already begun rigorous training just days after the auction.
Notable Indian players such as Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sarfaraz Khan, Shardul Thakur, and Tushar Deshpande are expected to participate in the league.
“We are focused on our preparations. As the reigning champions, we recognize the need to work harder this year to defend our title, as nothing is guaranteed,” Lad remarked.
He added, “Last year, we were seen as underdogs, but now we carry the champion's title. We aim to create a supportive environment for the team without adding excessive pressure.”
Tournament Structure and Emerging Talents
The men's tournament will feature eight teams, each playing five matches in the league stage, with the top four advancing to the semi-finals on June 11.
In addition to established stars, the league will serve as a significant platform for rising players like Ayush Mhatre, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Musheer Khan, Suryansh Shedge, and Abhigyan Kundu.
Lad highlighted several promising young players in his squad, including Arjun Dani, Pratik Shukla, and Sahil Jadhav, who he believes could make a notable impact this season.
“We have a talented roster. Everyone has the potential, but the team that thrives under pressure will shine,” he stated.
Significance of the T20 Mumbai League
The T20 Mumbai League has been instrumental in nurturing talent for the IPL and Indian cricket, producing stars like Shivam Dube, a two-time T20 World Cup champion.
Dube emphasized the league's growing significance as a stepping stone to greater opportunities, stating, “The T20 Mumbai League is a crucial platform for players. IPL teams and scouts closely observe it. To secure a spot in the Mumbai domestic team, one must impress.”
“Every player feels the pressure and motivation. It’s essential to be aggressive yet composed to perform well. Our focus will remain on preparation and maintaining our routine,” he added.
Inaugural T20 Mumbai Women’s League
The 2026 edition will also introduce the T20 Mumbai Women’s League, featuring three teams: SoBo Mumbai Falcons, Thane Sky Risers, and Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs.
The women’s league kicks off on June 2, with the Thane Sky Risers, led by Saima Thakor, facing off against Sayali Satghare’s SoBo Mumbai Falcons. The tournament will showcase exciting players like Humairaa Kaazi, teenage talent Ira Jadhav, Simran Shaikh, Sanika Chalke, and Vrushali Bhagat.
Lad commended the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for launching the women’s league, calling it a significant advancement for the sport in the city.
“This initiative by the MCA is monumental. Women deserve equal support in all associations. The recent success of the Women’s ODI World Cup has made the country proud,” he remarked.
Learning from Experience
Tushar Deshpande, currently with Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, is part of the MSC Maratha Royals. Lad emphasized the importance of experienced players like Deshpande in the team, noting that young players can learn a lot just by observing their routines.
“Team bonding is crucial. Even without direct communication, observing seasoned players like Tushar can provide valuable lessons,” he said.
“I encourage young players to pay attention to how established players prepare for games. My time with MI (Mumbai Indians) taught me a lot, even when I wasn’t playing regularly,” Lad concluded.
The MSC Maratha Royals will begin their campaign against Aakash Tigers Mumbai Western Suburbs on June 1, with all matches, including the women’s league, taking place at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
