MS Dhoni's Return Sparks Hope for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026
Dhoni's Impact on CSK's IPL Campaign
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) received a significant boost as they look to revive their 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) season following a disappointing eight-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. After finishing in 10th place last year, CSK entered this season with fresh enthusiasm, having invested heavily in young talent. However, their batting lineup faltered against the Royals, managing only 127 runs. The team led by Riyan Parag successfully chased the target with 47 balls remaining, highlighted by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's rapid half-century off just 15 balls.
MS Dhoni, sidelined due to a calf injury, did not accompany the team to Guwahati. The franchise announced that the 44-year-old would be unavailable for two weeks, although some sources suggest he might be out longer. Nevertheless, Dhoni's recent return to the nets has rekindled hope for the 'Yellow Army' ahead of their upcoming match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on April 3 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Footage of Dhoni practicing was broadcasted, and the franchise shared images of him arriving at the ground with his kit bag.
CSK's schedule is packed, as they will face PBKS on Friday before heading to Bengaluru to take on their rivals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), on April 5. Currently, it seems unlikely that Dhoni will participate in these matches. His potential return against Delhi Capitals (DC) on April 11 in Chennai remains uncertain. Notably, the match against RR marked only the sixth time in CSK's history that Dhoni missed a game in 278 matches, and it was the first absence since 2019. This match also marked the first time in the franchise's history that both Dhoni and Suresh Raina were not on the field.
