MS Dhoni Set to Make IPL Comeback with Chennai Super Kings Against Mumbai Indians
Dhoni's Anticipated Return to IPL
Iconic Indian cricketer MS Dhoni is poised to make his return in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a highly anticipated match against their fierce rivals, the Mumbai Indians. After a prolonged absence, fans can expect to see Dhoni back behind the stumps, donning the wicketkeeper's gloves as these two historically successful teams clash on Thursday.
Former CSK all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has indicated that Dhoni is fit to return and is likely to replace Sanju Samson as the team's wicketkeeper. Dhoni has been spotted practicing both batting and wicketkeeping in the nets, showcasing his readiness for the match. He appeared comfortable during his practice sessions, even facing the team's foreign bowlers, Jamie Overton and Matt Henry, without any signs of his previous calf injury.
Ashwin expressed confidence in Dhoni's return, stating, "I've never seen Dhoni keeping in the nets before—never in my life. Today, he was keeping, which means he is going to take the wicketkeeping gloves, and Sanju would have to take an outfield role or might come in as an impact player. And I'm 100% sure that he will play tomorrow (day after). I've heard that he is fit and good to go," in a video shared on his YouTube channel.
Although Dhoni missed the first 25 days of the current season, it was initially thought he would be out for a few weeks. Meanwhile, the Super Kings have faced several injury setbacks, with pacer Khaleel Ahmed and batter Ayush Mhatre ruled out for the remainder of the season. The team has yet to announce replacements for these players.
In addition to CSK's boost, the Mumbai Indians have confirmed that all-rounder Will Jacks is ready for the upcoming match. The English player is expected to vie for a position in the starting lineup after training with the team on Tuesday.
