Morocco's Coach Optimistic After Draw with Brazil in World Cup Opener
Morocco Holds Brazil to a Draw in World Cup Group Stage
New York [US], June 14: Mohamed Ouahbi, the head coach of Morocco, expressed his optimism regarding the future of Moroccan football following a 1-1 draw against Brazil, the five-time FIFA World Cup champions, in their Group C opener at MetLife Stadium on Saturday (Local Time).
The Moroccan team showcased a commendable performance against one of the tournament's favorites, managing to match Brazil in an exciting match and securing a crucial point to kick off their campaign.
Morocco took an early lead in the 21st minute with a goal from Ismael Saibari after creating several promising chances during a strong start. Brazil equalized in the 32nd minute through Vinicius Jr., ensuring the teams went into halftime on level terms.
In the second half, both teams continued to press forward, generating numerous opportunities in a thrilling back-and-forth match. However, exceptional goalkeeping from Morocco's Bono and Brazil's Alisson kept the scoreline intact, despite a total of 27 shots from both sides.
Ouahbi expressed satisfaction with his team's performance and their courage to play possession-based football against top-tier opponents.
“We are confident about the future of Moroccan football. We drew; we’re happy. While we aimed for a win, I’m not disappointed,” Ouahbi stated to reporters after the match.
“What fills me with pride is our boldness to demand the ball even under pressure. This is a significant quality we possess.”
Prior to the tournament, the coach had mentioned Morocco's desire to move past the underdog label that followed their historic journey to the World Cup semi-finals four years ago, where they became the first African nation to reach that stage.
After the draw, Ouahbi reiterated his aspirations for the team, saying, “I aim to surpass the semi-finals, but this was a good match. One point is satisfactory, and we will improve.”
He also acknowledged the support from Moroccan fans, despite being outnumbered in the stadium.
“I’m not sure if only 20% of the crowd were Moroccans, but their cheers were very loud. If it was just 20%, they certainly made it feel like there were many more,” Ouahbi remarked.
“I hope they enjoyed watching a great match tonight, and I look forward to this continuing.”
The draw leaves both Morocco and Brazil with one point each in Group C as they begin their quest for knockout stage qualification. Morocco's next match will be against Scotland, while Brazil will face Haiti on Saturday.
