Morne Morkel Backs Abhishek Sharma Ahead of T20 World Cup Semifinal
Morkel Supports Sharma Amid Struggles
India's bowling coach, Morne Morkel, has come to the defense of Abhishek Sharma, who has struggled during the T20 World Cup 2026. Aside from a half-century against Zimbabwe, Sharma has had a disappointing run, recording three ducks in his initial three innings. With discussions about his potential removal from the playing XI, Morkel suggested that Sharma could learn from Sanju Samson's experience. After facing a series of low scores, Samson was dropped but seized his second chance, scoring an impressive 97 not out to lead the team to victory against the West Indies and secure a spot in the final. Morkel remarked, "The game can be hard and cruel on you. Sanju is an example. It’s a good learning for him, it’ll help him down the line. Abhishek’s way of playing is that 1-2 shots give him confidence and rhythm," during the pre-match press conference.

There has been considerable speculation regarding the pitch conditions, and Morkel believes it will favor the batsmen. "We will have a better indication of the pitch tomorrow. Quite hard to judge it in the afternoon but we think it’ll be a high scoring game," he noted.
Morkel Acknowledges England's Strength
India Wary Of England Threat
Morkel expressed caution regarding the formidable challenge posed by England, highlighting their depth in both batting and bowling. "England is a street-smart team. Batting is quite deep, which makes them a dangerous side. They have wicket-taking options, fearless in T20 cricket. Good shoutout tomorrow," he stated. He emphasized that while India possesses the talent to succeed, they must perform at their best to secure a win. "This team has quality, but success is not guaranteed so hopefully tomorrow everyone performs ahead of the semi-final."
