Mondo Duplantis Shatters Championship Record at European Championships
Mondo Duplantis Dominates European Championships
Birmingham [UK], August 17: Mondo Duplantis, the pole vault sensation and multiple-time Olympic and world champion, has once again made headlines by breaking the championship record at the European Championships, marking his fourth consecutive title in this event.
On Sunday, the 27-year-old Swedish athlete successfully cleared a height of 6.15 meters. He was joined by Emmanouil Karalis as the only competitors to surpass the 6.00m mark.
Duplantis not only matched the previous European Championship record of 6.10 m but also surpassed it, setting a new benchmark at 6.15 m, according to reports from Olympics.com.
Following his record-breaking performance, there was speculation that Duplantis might attempt to break his own world record of 6.31 m, achieved earlier this year in March. However, he opted not to pursue that challenge.
Karalis secured the silver medal with a jump of 6.00 m, marking his second consecutive medal at the European Championships, while France's Thierry Baptiste took home the bronze after clearing 5.85m.
Earlier this year, Duplantis made history at the World Athletics Indoor Championships by becoming the first man to win four consecutive world indoor pole vault titles, also setting a new championship record during that event.
After Australian Kurtis Mascharll's attempt at 6.00 m for the bronze, the competition for gold narrowed down to Duplantis and Greece's Emmanouil Karalis, as noted by Olympics.com.
Karalis, buoyed by his personal best of 6.17 m achieved at the home championships just weeks prior, successfully cleared both 6.10 m and 6.15 m. Duplantis, however, cleared these heights effortlessly on his first attempts.
When Karalis was unable to clear 6.20 m on his first try, Duplantis soared to a new record height of 6.25 m, surpassing his own championship record of 6.20 m set during the 2022 edition in Belgrade.
