Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 10: Veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, following his pivotal role in East Zone's Duleep Trophy victory during his 100th first-class match, has expressed his desire to return to the Indian cricket team. At 36, Shami's passion for the game remains as strong as ever.

Having last played for India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final, Shami has not participated in a Test match since the 2023 World Test Championship final. His recent performance in domestic cricket has reignited discussions about his potential return to the national squad as he aims to showcase his fitness and skill.

East Zone celebrated a long-awaited Duleep Trophy title after their final against South Zone concluded in a draw, with Ishan Kishan's team securing the trophy due to a significant first-innings advantage.

Shami contributed to this success by taking two wickets during the match.

Reflecting on his motivation, Shami stated, "There are numerous reasons to remain driven if you seek them out. Positivity can be drawn from any ground you play on. At this level, lacking self-motivation indicates a flawed approach. Regardless of the stage, your focus should always be on advancing to the next level," he remarked after the final day of the Duleep Trophy in Chennai.

He further emphasized, "I always say you play for the badge. Wearing that crest elevates the significance of the game, regardless of the level. When you play for that badge, your hunger to succeed naturally intensifies. My mindset is straightforward: I aim to make the most of every opportunity and fulfill my responsibilities to the team."

Shami is actively seeking a spot in the Indian team, having had a remarkable Duleep Trophy season where he took seven wickets across three matches, including a standout five-wicket haul in the semi-final.

Additionally, Shami had a stellar performance in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, where he secured 37 wickets at an impressive average of 16.72, featuring three five-wicket hauls.
