Mohammad Kaif Critiques KKR's Investment in Cameron Green
Kaif Questions KKR's Decision on Green
Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has expressed skepticism regarding the Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) decision to invest a staggering ₹25.2 crore in Australian all-rounder Cameron Green during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Kaif acknowledged Green's batting skills but emphasized that he falls short of the legacy left by KKR icon Andre Russell, who recently announced his retirement from the IPL after being released from the team. Kaif stated that the gap between Green and Russell is significant, and he doubts that Rovman Powell, another West Indian player, can adequately fill that void. “Cameron Green is not even close to Andre Russell. He is a good batter, but the difference is huge when you compare him with Russell,” Kaif remarked on his YouTube channel.
The Challenge of Filling Russell's Role
Russell's Shoes Are Too Big To Fill For Green & Powell
Kaif further elaborated on his views, noting that while Powell has made valuable contributions with both bat and ball, he has not consistently bowled his full quota of overs. Kaif dismissed the notion that either Green or Powell could replace Russell's impact on the team. “Russell’s absence won’t be filled by Powell. He contributed a lot with his batting and was also a golden arm. He didn’t always get to bowl four overs, but whenever he bowled, he took wickets. His void cannot be filled even by Cameron Green,” Kaif asserted.
KKR's Strategic Move with Russell
The 45-year-old did not hold back in discussing KKR's rationale for bringing Russell into the coaching staff. He drew parallels to the situation with Chris Gayle, who thrived after leaving KKR for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Concerned that Russell might follow a similar path, KKR opted to retain him in a support role. Kaif speculated that KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan may have influenced this decision. “I feel they didn’t want to repeat what happened with Chris Gayle. Andre Russell still plays in various leagues and hasn’t completely retired. I think there was a change in plan later on… KKR felt that if this guy goes into the auction and does what Chris Gayle did after being released, they would be making the same mistake twice,” Kaif explained.
Cameron Green Faces Criticism
Cameron Green Under-Fire
Green has faced scrutiny following his lucrative IPL contract, with several former players, including Greg Chappell and Subramaniam Badrinath, questioning his performance. Chappell suggested that his time away from bowling may have affected his batting. Badrinath went further, stating on his YouTube channel, "He is not worth that much. Has he single-handedly done anything in the IPL?" Despite a strong start with the Mumbai Indians in 2023, where he scored 452 runs and took six wickets, Green struggled to replicate that success with RCB in IPL 2024, managing only 255 runs and ten wickets. He has also dealt with injury setbacks, missing the entirety of IPL 2025.
