Celebrating Success: MK Stalin Meets Cricketers

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) - On March 16, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister MK Stalin had a meeting with Indian cricketers Washington Sundar and Varun Chakaravarthy to celebrate the team's victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. He expressed his heartfelt wishes for their future endeavors.

In a post shared on X, Stalin reflected on his enjoyable conversation with the talented duo, affectionately referred to as Tamil Nadu's "spin twins." He commended their dedication, discipline, and self-confidence, hoping for many more successful performances from them.

Stalin's post highlighted the memorable moments shared with the cricketers, emphasizing their journey marked by hard work and determination. He wished both players continued success in their careers.

Although Washington Sundar participated in only two matches during the T20 World Cup 2026 without taking any wickets, Varun Chakaravarthy played a pivotal role in India's title defense. He emerged as one of the tournament's top wicket-takers, claiming 14 wickets in nine matches at an average of 20.50, tying with fellow player Jasprit Bumrah.

In the final match of the T20 World Cup 2026, India triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs on March 8, successfully defending their title. This victory marked a historic moment as India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to secure consecutive titles after their 2024 win, and the first to lift the trophy three times (2007, 2024, and 2026).

During the final, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. However, a remarkable performance from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 52 runs off just 21 balls, along with a 98-run partnership with Samson, made New Zealand regret their decision.

Samson then formed a century partnership with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 54 runs off 25 balls, helping India surpass the 200-run mark by the 16th over. After a brief slowdown, Shivam Dube added valuable runs, finishing with 26 not out off eight balls, leading India to a total of 255/5, the highest score in T20 World Cup finals.

James Neesham was New Zealand's standout bowler, taking 3 wickets for 46 runs.

In response to India's 256-run target, Axar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah dismantled the New Zealand batting lineup, reducing them to 72/5, despite Tim Seifert's half-century (52 runs off 26 balls).

Despite a short partnership between Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner, who scored 43 runs off 35 balls, India continued to take wickets, ultimately bowling New Zealand out for just 159 runs.
