Santner Reflects on Series Defeat

Hamilton [New Zealand], November 1: New Zealand's captain Mitchell Santner shared insights on the pivotal moments that led to his team's 3-2 T20I series loss to India. He noted that the series outcome might have been different if the team had seized opportunities in the initial matches held in Christchurch.

After New Zealand's seven-wicket win in the final T20I at Seddon Park on Sunday, Santner remarked on the competitiveness of the series, highlighting several positives, especially in their batting and bowling performances.

He stated, "We will reflect on this tightly contested series against a strong opponent. Those crucial moments in the first two games could have swung the series in our favor. While the final score shows 3-2 to India, it could have easily been the other way around. From a cricketing perspective, we have much to build on, particularly with our batting and the adaptability of our bowlers in the last few games."

Bowling Strategy and Future Lessons

Discussing the bowling strategy in the final match, Santner explained how the bowlers adjusted their tactics after India's third-wicket partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan shifted the game's momentum.

He said, "We varied our approach effectively, especially with the new ball. When Shreyas and Kishan accelerated, our seamers adapted by mixing up their lengths and styles, which provided valuable learning experiences for us."

Looking ahead, Santner emphasized the importance of the lessons learned from this series, particularly with the next opportunity to play in similar conditions likely coming during a future World Cup.

Team Depth and Player Performances

Santner expressed confidence in the team's bowling depth, noting that player rotation had allowed less frequently used players to showcase their skills.

He commented, "We are in a strong position regarding depth. The current schedule has necessitated more rotation than usual, but it has given opportunities to fringe players who have stepped up impressively. This bodes well for our future."

He also praised Glenn Phillips for his consistent batting throughout the series, highlighting how his ability to settle before attacking has been crucial for New Zealand in key moments.

Final Match Highlights

In the fifth and final T20I, New Zealand triumphed over India by seven wickets, successfully chasing a target of 192 runs in just 17.4 overs, securing a consolation victory while India claimed the series 3-2.

Tim Seifert was instrumental in the chase, scoring a rapid 93 runs off 50 balls, complemented by Glenn Phillips, who remained not out at 65 off 38 deliveries. Their partnership of 86 runs for the third wicket put New Zealand in a dominant position. Phillips also achieved his fourth half-century of the series, joining the ranks of Mohammad Rizwan and S Ravichandran as players with four or more 50-plus scores in a bilateral T20I series.

Earlier, India had recovered from a shaky start at 19/2, thanks to a powerful 93-run partnership between Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer. Kishan scored 61 off 31 balls, while Iyer contributed 50 off 23 deliveries.

Naman Dhir added 33 runs off 23 balls, and Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped in with 22 runs off 17 balls, helping India set a total of 191/8 in their 20 overs. New Zealand's Adam Milne stood out with the ball, taking four wickets for just 19 runs, while Blair Tickner and Nathan Smith also claimed wickets. Despite the loss in the final match, India secured the series victory 3-2.
