Celebration in Imphal as Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold

Imphal (Manipur) [India], July 26: The family of Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu is overjoyed following her gold medal victory in the women's 48kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Her mother, Saikhom Tombi, expressed her pride and confidence in her daughter's abilities, despite initial worries about an injury.

In a conversation with a news outlet, Tombi shared her unwavering belief in Chanu's success, revealing that her daughter sought her blessings before the competition began. "I was sure she would win, and she did. This is the third time I have felt this happiness. Before the competition, she called me for my blessings, and later informed me of her victory," she stated.

While Tombi had some doubts due to Chanu's injury, her excitement was palpable after the win. "I prayed for her success, and although I was uncertain about her chances, I was thrilled when she emerged victorious. This is her third gold medal, and I couldn't be happier," she added.

Chanu's uncle, Vinod Kumar Meetei, also shared his confidence in her performance, praising her resilience. "It feels amazing; I always believed she would secure the gold medal. This victory is a testament to her determination and the support of everyone who believes in her," he remarked.

Chanu achieved her third Commonwealth Games gold by lifting 105 kg in the clean and jerk segment of the women's 48 kg final at Glasgow 2026, marking India's first gold medal of the event.

Previously, Chanu had won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022. She had set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch and, despite an initial unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg in the clean and jerk, she rebounded with successful lifts of 82 kg and 85 kg, setting a new Games and Commonwealth record.

Her final lift of 105 kg secured her gold medal and completed a remarkable hat-trick of Commonwealth Games victories.
