Mirabai Chanu Shines Again with Third Consecutive Commonwealth Gold
Mirabai Chanu's Historic Achievement
Glasgow, Scotland - On July 26, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed her admiration for Mirabai Chanu after the exceptional weightlifter secured her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, calling it a moment of national pride.
Chanu showcased her prowess in the women's 48kg weightlifting category on Sunday, further solidifying her impressive Commonwealth Games legacy following her victories in Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.
PT Usha took to X to share her excitement, posting images with the Olympic silver medalist and praising her remarkable consistency at the Commonwealth level. She stated, "Champion! Many congratulations to @mirabai_chanu. What an inspirational athlete she is. 3 back-to-back gold medals at the CWG. The first time we heard the national anthem in Glasgow and hopefully many more times over the next week!"
In a conversation with the media following Chanu's victory, Usha expressed that the weightlifter's performance filled the nation with pride and joy. "Seeing Mirabai Chanu lift weights was exhilarating, and it’s a proud moment for all Indians that she won the Commonwealth Gold. She was confident in her abilities, and I am thrilled for her success," she remarked.
Chanu's victory was complemented by compatriot Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, who earned a silver medal in the men's 60kg event, marking India's second medal in weightlifting and the first silver of the Games.
From the beginning, the Tokyo Olympic silver medalist dominated her category, starting with a Commonwealth record lift of 85kg in the snatch, establishing a strong lead in the competition.
Although she faced a setback on her first clean and jerk attempt at 82kg, Chanu quickly regained her composure, successfully lifting the weight on her second try. She then achieved another 85kg lift on her third attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record in this discipline.
The 30-year-old concluded her event by lifting 105kg, securing the gold medal and completing a historic hat-trick of Commonwealth Games titles.
With this victory, Chanu became the first Indian to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in weightlifting, ensuring that India's national anthem was played for the first time at the Glasgow Games.
India's medal tally began with para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's bronze, followed by Rishikanta Singh's silver, and Chanu's gold brought the total to three medals, marking an excellent start for the Indian weightlifting team.
