Union Minister Advocates for Mirabai Chanu's Recognition

New Delhi, August 1: Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav, the Union Minister of State for Ayush and Health, has taken the initiative to write to Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, advocating for the inclusion of renowned weightlifter and Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu for this year's prestigious Arjuna Award, as stated in an official press release.

In his correspondence, Jadhav emphasized Chanu's extraordinary accomplishments and her significant impact on Indian weightlifting. He noted that the athlete from Manipur has made history with her impressive performances at the Commonwealth Games, instilling great pride in the nation.

Jadhav pointed out Chanu's remarkable achievement of securing gold medals at consecutive Commonwealth Games, highlighting her status as the first Indian athlete to win gold on each occasion. He also mentioned her outstanding lifts in the 48 kg category, which include record-breaking performances in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift categories.

Despite already receiving several of India's highest sporting honors, such as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Padma, along with an Olympic medal, Chanu's childhood aspiration of winning the Arjuna Award remains unfulfilled. This dream has been with her since her early training days in her village in Manipur.

Jadhav urged the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports to consider Chanu's nomination, stating that awarding her the Arjuna Award would be a well-deserved acknowledgment of her exceptional talent, remarkable performances, and invaluable contributions to Indian sports.

He also highlighted that Chanu's inspiring journey from a small village in Manipur to becoming one of India's top weightlifters exemplifies her determination, perseverance, and dedication, serving as a source of inspiration for countless young Indians.
