Mirabai Chanu's Remarkable Achievement


Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu expressed her joy after securing three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games (CWG), describing it as a dream realized. Chanu achieved her third consecutive medal by lifting a total of 190 kg, setting a new record for the Commonwealth Games. She successfully lifted 82 kg and 85 kg in her snatch attempts, followed by a clean and jerk lift of 105 kg. This impressive performance placed her ahead of Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong, who lifted 168 kg for silver, and Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry, who took home bronze with 167 kg.


Chanu credited the unwavering support and love from her fans for her success. "I am extremely happy. The encouragement from so many people who prayed for me and believed I could win another gold medal has been invaluable. Winning three consecutive gold medals at the Commonwealth Games is a dream for any athlete," she shared with Sports Now.


Despite facing numerous challenges, including an injury prior to the event, Chanu managed to triumph and secure the prestigious gold for India. "I had a lot on my mind and faced many hurdles to get here. I dealt with an injury during training and had to navigate through various difficulties," she recounted.


'My Motivation to Serve India'


Chanu expressed her desire to contribute to her country, which fueled her motivation during tough times. "I wanted to achieve something for India," she stated. She also extended her gratitude to her supporters, saying, "Thank you so much for the love, prayers, and unwavering support."


India's Weightlifting Success


On the same day, India secured three medals in total, all in weightlifting, with Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi earning silver in the Men's 60 kg and 65 kg finals, respectively. This brought India's medal tally to four. Earlier, Jhandu Kumar claimed a bronze in para powerlifting, while boxer Lovlina Borgohain has also guaranteed a medal after advancing to the semifinals, having received a bye in the quarterfinals.
