Zapopan [Mexico], June 24: Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of Spain, praised Mikel Oyarzabal for his outstanding contribution in Spain's 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia during the FIFA World Cup. He emphasized that Oyarzabal has the potential to create an "exceptional legacy" in Spanish football.
In addition to the opening goal scored by the talented Lamine Yamal, Oyarzabal's two goals were pivotal in securing the win, especially following a goalless draw against Cape Verde in their first group match.
Amidst a lineup featuring stars like Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri, and Rodri, Oyarzabal made a remarkable impact, netting two goals and providing an assist within the first 24 minutes of play.
De la Fuente expressed confidence in Oyarzabal's abilities, stating, "I do not know anyone who underestimates him. Those who understand football recognize his immense value. While some may view his contributions as minor, we understand their significance. He went nearly 30 minutes without touching the ball, yet he became the first player to score twice and assist in just 24 minutes. Dani Olmo also stood out with 34 successful passes and a 92% accuracy rate, with the coach labeling him as "one of the best players in the world at operating between the lines." De la Fuente remarked on Olmo's effectiveness in critical situations.
Alex Baena from Atletico Madrid and Mikel Merino from Arsenal were also acknowledged for their contributions. De la Fuente noted Baena's ability to provide width and play through the middle, praising his quality and shooting skills. He referred to Merino as a "rock," highlighting his determination to play despite not being at full fitness.
Following the victory over Saudi Arabia, Baena commented on the team's depth, stating that even less recognized players are valued within the squad. He asserted that any player in the Spanish team could start for any national side globally.
"We may not receive the same level of attention worldwide, but every player in the Spain squad is capable of starting for any other national team," Baena said. "We are aware of our quality, and the coaching staff acknowledges it as well, which is what truly matters," he added.
Baena played a crucial role in the first two goals scored by Yamal and Oyarzabal, expressing gratitude for his ability to assist the team.
