Carrick's Appointment as Head Coach

On Friday, Manchester United officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick as the club's permanent head coach, signing him to a two-year contract. Carrick, who stepped in as interim manager in January after Ruben Amorim's exit, is now the seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013. His appointment comes as a reward for an impressive turnaround mid-season. After inheriting a squad that finished a disappointing 15th last season, Carrick led United to a third-place finish in the Premier League, securing a spot in the Champions League. During his interim period, he achieved 11 victories in 16 matches, including notable wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool.

In addition to the results, Carrick has been praised for rejuvenating the team and enhancing the performance of key players like Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, and Benjamin Sesko. His immediate success was pivotal in convincing the club's management to offer him the permanent position, opting against other candidates such as Andoni Iraola from Bournemouth and Oliver Glasner from Crystal Palace.

Restoring Manchester United's Legacy

Restoring The Club's DNA

Jason Wilcox, the Director of Football who oversaw the managerial search, remarked that Carrick has rightfully earned this opportunity. He highlighted that, in addition to the favorable results, Carrick has fostered a winning culture at the Carrington training facility and has embraced an approach that resonates with the club's rich history. Carrick now faces the challenge of bringing stability to a position that has seen many high-profile managers struggle. Previous attempts with renowned winners like Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, as well as international champions like Erik ten Hag and club legends like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, have not succeeded in restoring the club to its former glory, a standard Carrick is well-acquainted with.

Although Carrick's only prior full-time managerial experience was with Championship team Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025, his profound understanding of United's expectations was crucial. Having secured 12 major trophies during his 12-year playing career under Ferguson, Carrick expressed great pride in accepting the permanent role, stating that the club and its fans deserve to compete for the highest honors in football once more.
